What would be a decent used driver that I could buy?

Is buy a used r7 driver worth it?

  • I bought a used TaylorMade r7 Driver for like 90 bucks. I know it's a much older model, and I'm far from a pro, but I was wondering if this club is going to hit as good as it should or if the use and age on it will make it dramatically less effective. Or, do these clubs tend to hold their worth and last a long time?

  • Answer:

If the club is in good shape and it fits your swing you just made a great deal. I think you paid to much but if your happy with it thats all that matters.

The r7 is around 7 year old technology. It is slightly smaller than the current day clubs (it was around 400cc instead of 460) and was the first generation of the adjustable clubs. That said, it was a very good driver then, and it's still pretty good today. Frankly, I think you overpaid a little for it as I've seen them for $50 or so, used, but that doesn't mean it's a bad club. As for wear and tear, the club should perform pretty much the same today as it did when it was new. It's a good club, go play with it.

The club should still work fine but you could of gotten alot newer of a club for that price. You should look on ebay next time that you are thinking about buying a club...also go to a local golf store so you can use a demo club and get the feel for what club you want to buy.

Strictly speaking money, they don't hold their worth. Especially with Taylormade's... they have too fast of a product turnover. As far as playability goes, aside from the adjustable hosel and sole plate (which aren't that ground-breaking) they have just as much playability as anything out there. Driver technology (forgiveness, face springiness, head size, etc.) have been maxed out since 2006, and center of gravity location is a tertiary determinate of playability- especially when it's as low as it can physically go (unless they make crown-less drivers with tungsten soles). If someone like TIger Woods or Bubba Watson (swing speeds in the 120's) hit thousands of balls every day with that driver, then you might have a problem with face structural failure. For anyone else, especially we mere mortals, that shouldn't be a problem. As long as there's no cracks, you'll be ok. Just get that club properly fit for length, flex, swing weight, etc. and enjoy it.

If they are suitable for you swing and in good condition. Then that would be a good buy. Good luck
