Why does Tiger Woods always snub the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, NC?

  • The Wyndham Championship started out as the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938. Its one of the oldest tournaments on the tour where great American golfer Sam Snead won a number of championships there between the late 1930s and 1960s. Currently The Wyndham has the only Donald Ross design course on the regular tour so there is a bit of Prestige and history in Greensboro. That being said, Tiger Woods has NEVER played in Greensboro's PGA event his entire career. With him struggling for FedEx points this year and with the Wyndham being the last regular tournament on the tour, it doesn't seem like he is going to play the Wyndham in 2011 either. Why does he snub Greensboro?

  • Answer:

As a fan of the game, and a committee member at the Wyndham Championship, of course I would like to see Tiger play our event. It would do wonders for our community, even if his star has lost A LOT of its luster. However, though the chances of him playing this year may be higher than ever before because of the unique set of circumstances that exist . . . don't hold your breath. Because of the reasons listed in the other answers, he typically has nothing to gain by adding Greensboro to his schedule. Frankly, no top player does because of the event's unfortunate spot between the final major of the year and the first FedEx Cup playoff tournament. If a player has aspirations of making it to the TOUR Championship's final 30, they face the prospect of playing 7 events in a row if they tee it up at the Wyndham (WGC Bridgestone, PGA, Wyndham, 4 Playoff events). The higher ranked/name players that do come have special circumstances. Lucas Glover has family in the area. Brandt Snedeker is sponsored by Wyndham. You get the picture. It's a wonderful opportunity for guys ranked outside the top 50 in FedEx points, so almost all of those players show up - either to try and make the top 125, or defend their position within the elite group. The only reason Tiger would play this year is if he truly desires to compete in some or all of the Playoff events. Whether it's because of their grand stage, or simply because he wants to get more golf under his belt this year, he's gotta want to get in (a little begging by TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem could help our cause). Of course, there is a good chance he will have already solidified a spot in the top 125 come Wyndham week by playing well in either the WGC event or the PGA, and this all becomes a moot point. But, on the off chance that Tiger plays well enough to think his game is coming around, but not well enough to guarantee a Playoff spot, we will be at the point where Tiger actually has to consider playing Greensboro. Even then . . . don't hold your breath.

He's too good for those "lesser" tournaments, like he Wyndham and the John Deere... has been for awhile. He only likes those big draw tourneys like the WGC events, the FedEx Cup events, Jack and Arnie's tourneys and the majors. Oh and those that have ties to him, like the Chevron and AT&T.

Tiger's schedule often seemed dictated by: 1. Courses that fit his eye; he doesn't play events that don't suit his game. 2. Events that his sponsors want him to play. 3. The cadence of the event and next major; he has a pre-major routine. 4. Courses near a Waffle House.

Woods' schedule is largely set in stone...he's never played Greensboro and likely won't unless the Tour enacts a "1 in 5" rule (mandating that players appear in every event at least once every five years). It doesn't suit his schedule. He will play the USPGA Championship, the WGC event @ Firestone, and that's about it barring he makes it into the Playoffs (not sure if he will be a captain's pick for the President's Cup this year or not). I would be shocked to see him play three weeks in a row. Because of the number of wins he has, he has lifetime exempt status on Tour so there's no fear of ever losing his card. He can pretty much pick his spots, which is what he'll do.
