Why only 3 outs in baseball? Why not four? Why 10 yards for a first down in football? Why not 15. Why not 5 downs instead of four? Because people who know the sport try to come up with the best rules to make the sport fair and fun. They could change the number of clubs from 14 to 16 and it probably wouldn't make that much of a difference. Probably most pros would carry more wedges since those are the "money" clubs in the bag. But really, what's the point, where does it end?

Maintaining golf as a game of skill is the main goal of the USGA. That's why they sometimes make things "harder". According to the apocryphal story (see link), Bobby Jones and Tony Torrance were talking. Bobby said that he carried 16 clubs when he won the Grand Slam. Tony said he carried 12 when he lost a tournament. So they split the difference and came up with 14.

graig wood won the masters with 33 clubs. the powers to be decided this was to many. i think the filled a hat with numbers possibly ten to twenty. then drew one number. happened to be 14. i am a antique carry 5 wedges . luckier than you cant hit driver. but with today's wedges. you really have made a very good point. let the pros carry 14. let us guys have fun.

no idea?????

because fist of all, i have a bag that can barely hold my 14 clubs but thats besides the point since tour bags can hold tons more. also, you probably notice that you really only have 3 to 5 clubs that you always find yourself using during a round and the rest just sit there

So if you want an extra hybrid or wedge, dump one of the other clubs and replace it with whatever you want. But have a thought for the poor caddie who has to pack 16, or 18 or 50 clubs in a bag

The rule was also as a thought towards caddies. It wasn't just Tour pros who used them way back when. Regular hacks like you and I could do so, as well. There are places all over the UK that still employ caddies, but they're a dieing breed here in the US. Anyway, there was a limit set on golf clubs so that caddies (who are human, after all) wouldn't be forced to lug 75+ lbs for 18 holes over four days. That's cruel and inhumane. Most amateurs don't have a firm enough grasp on distance control and accuracy to handle the 14 clubs they have now. what's the point in adding more confusion/frustration?

You can carry as many clubs as you want to when you are playing recreationally. You only have to adhere to the 14 club rule when you're in a tournament. Obviously you can leave a club or 2 out if you want to carry an extra wedge or hybrid.

it makes the game hard while offering the flexibility needed to tailor your set to your course. for instance a long course you would take less wedges and more woods and hybrids and vice versa.
