How do I convince my dad to get me new golf clubs?

  • Hello, I am a freshman in high school this year and narrowly missed the varsity golf team this fall. I got a new set of clubs about three or four years ago once I got back into golf (I played for like 6 mos. when I was like 7. They were a cheap set of Acuitys.) I have recently been shooting in the low 80's consistently however I feel like my game is being limited with my current clubs because I am not able to shape the ball with these Callaways. I am definitely going to make varsity next year and I will be the worst. I'm not saying that new clubs will magically make me better, I'm saying that my current clubs are holding me back. New clubs that are more for players like me will let me reach my full potential compared to my old ones which are supposed to make misses better. I'm looking for clubs that will force me to groove a better swing, not make an okay swing and have a fine ball position, but have a good one that I put there purposely. Every time I talk to my dad about it he says that it's not the clubs that make you better, it's the player. I keep showing him my reasoning, but he won't budge. I even got my friend to talk to him (he is like a scratch golfer.) I even offered to go halves on the clubs, but still no. Who even knows if I will make varsity due to other kids getting better, I want to have the best chance I can so I need to practice with these new clubs this winter to lower my scores even further. Please, if you have any advice on how to proceed, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Top-Flite XL 13-Piece Complete Golf Club Set are my first set of golf clubs and I am very pleased with them. While I don't have any point of reference other than the clubs I have been renting from the club house, I believe the quality and durability of these clubs is very high. I have worked with each club and found them all to work well though I tend to favor the 7 iron. The putter is a little funny looking but well balanced. Also, the bag is very comfortable to carry and has enough pockets and pouches to carry everything you will need when starting out. I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend this set to anyone that is just starting out.

I think you think more of your game than what is reality. You didn't play for "like 6 mos.", take a break and all of a sudden become Tiger Woods. YOU are what's holding you back, not your clubs. You want to feed your ego by wanting "tour" models or blades, when what you have will absolutely allow you to do what you need. I'll get a thumbs down since I'm not telling you what you want to hear, but so be it.

Just ask if You can go to a range at your club and Test out some clubs, Tell your dad to come with you and watch the difference, also get you coach to explain to your dad the improvement that will be made, took me about 3 years to get my first real set of clubs ( Maxfli Mystique V2) and since then have upgraded to a new dimension of club for me (Callaway Razr), I am currently trying to find a driver such as the R9 Supertri or the XL 270 for $200 with has been fairly easy to improve on my current driver (Cougar XC2 [Sq] ), other options is get a part time job you'l make a grand in a month easy and then you can afford somthing like the R9 TP or TM Mc both Mid cavity have amazing workability and awesome distance, Hope this helps, Sincerely, Kirky.

That sounds just like my grandpa when I needed a new driver. It was a beginners from like a set and I had horrible distance. I had to get my own clubs since he wouldn't help me out. I don't know what to tell you other than to show him the difference in your performance (which is what I did). I hope it all works out!

get a job. buy a used set of blades or something workable for like 200-300. pretty simple.
