What makes one golf iron hit the golf ball further than another?
-
for example a 2 iron will hit the ball further than a 3 iron, what causes that?
-
Answer:
The simple answer: 1) Loft: the angle of the clubface. Higher numbered irons have more loft than lower numbered irons. More loft means the ball flies higher and less far. Clubs like 8 and 9 iron are made for accuracy, not distance. An average golfer probably hits a 9 iron 130 yards, as opposed to hitting a 3 iron 180-190 yards. 2) Shaft length. A 3 iron is longer than a 9 iron, so the club head is moving faster at impact. More clubhead speed = more distance. So in your question, a 2 iron has slightly less loft and more shaft length than a 3 iron, meaning you will probable hit the 2 iron 10 yards further than your 3 iron.

many people think it is only the loft however this is not true.....it is the loft combined with the length of the club....the longer the club is there will be more leaverage created causing the ball to be struck with greater force....combine that with the lower trajectory and you get longer distance

Loft, 9 iron goes the highest and a 3 iron goes further but not as high

The angle of the club makes the height of the shot and how far it goes depends on increasing/decreasing the length of the club and what angle the club is at

There are three major types of clubs, known as woods, irons, and putters. A golfer usually carries a couple of woods, perhaps 10 irons, and a putter. The rules forbid the golfer to carry more than 14 clubs during the game. The parts of a club are the shaft and the head. The shaft is a tapered tube made of metal or fiberglass or graphite. The shaft is roughly 1/2 inch in diameter (12 mm) and they range from about 35 to 45 inches (89-115 cm) in length depending on the club. The head is the part that hits the ball. Each head has a face which contacts the ball during the stroke. Various clubs are designed with the face having differing "loft", the angle the face makes with the ground when the club is at rest. Typically, the greater the loft, the higher and shorter the resulting shot. The end of the shaft opposite the head is covered with a rubber or leather grip for the player to hold. A complete club weighs about 14 ounces. The clubs are numbered for identification with the smallest numbered clubs used to hit the ball the longest distances. Woods are long clubs (about 40-45 inches or 100-115 cm) with large heads that are somewhat spherical in shape with a flattened face that contacts the ball and a flattened bottom that slides over the ground without digging in during the stroke. Originally the "wood" heads were made of wood but modern club heads are made of hollow metal, sometimes filled with foam. The shaft enters the wood off-center, in such a way that the face of the wood is roughly at a right angle to one side of the shaft. Woods are used for the longest shots, ranging from 200 to 300 yards (180-275 m). The typical loft for wood faces ranges from 6 to 26 degrees.

the degree of the club determines the degree or angle the ball comes off of the face of the club - the length of the club creates a swing arc that determines the power of the swing - a pitching wedge which has a normal loft of 48* can be hit 125 yards - if you choke down to the metal on the same 48* club, the ball will go about 20-25 yards shorter - the longer the club, the longer the swing arc which produces more power delivered in to the ball - that is why you see the clubs get progressively longer as the degree of the club lessens which allows you to hit the ball farther and lower with each club down the line - in your example, a 2 iron is about 1 inch longer and about 2-4 degrees less than a 3 iron which is why you can hit the 2 iron farther than the 3 iron

Loft causes more distance. A 3 irons has 17 deg a 2 iron has about 14. Every 4 Deg or so equals about ten yards more in carry. But be aware that shaft length, flex and center of gravity can make 2 clubs with the same loft behave totally different. Center of gravity is weight placement on the clubhead a club with low cg will go higher and a club with high cg more penetrating. Find the right club for you hope this helps good luck.

A 2 iron will hit the ball further for 2 simple reasons !. less loft means lower trajectory so when it lands it should also roll further. 2. 2 iron will have a longer shaft than a 3 iron thus your swing arc will be bigger which allows you to generate more club head speed thus hit it harder. The 2 combined will make for a longer shot.

The amount of loft on the club depends on how far a golf ball goes. For instance, if one club has 30 degrees of loft and another has 34 degrees of loft, the one with 30 degrees will go further because it has a lower trajectory.

the length of the club(longer club, more distance), and the angle of the clubhead(higher angle, higher shot and lower angle lower shot). A lower angle will give you a farther shot because the height of the shot doesn't take away from the distance as much.
