How difficult is biking 400-450 miles?
-
I am planning a bicycle trip from Copenhagen, Denmark, to Stockholm, Sweden, at the end of this month. The trip up will last three days, and the total biking distance is about 400-450 miles. Assuming the trip ends up being 450 miles, we'd need to bike about 150 miles per day. We're estimating that we're going to cycle about 9 hours per day. How difficult would this be, and how much training would be necessary? The small group of people going are planning on bringing lot's of carbs with us, protein bars, water, bike clothes, etc. It's safe to say that we're just recreational cyclists, and normally bike just over 5 miles per day, 5 days per week, plus a few miles depending on the day. We run occasionally, but are not in shape for any marathon.

Answer:
150 miles per day & you are a "recreational cyclist" now? Good luck. You'll need it. Unless you can comfortably cover 50 - 75 miles per day, I wouldn't even attempt it. Even at 75 miles per day, that equates to SIX days.

the You will never make it. AND, you do not have enough time to train for it. One hundred miles is a significant ride by itself. But to do three days, back to back, it isn't going to happen. Take a train for the first day, say 300 miles of it, and ride the last 150 over two and one half days. You can train up, and possibly accomplish that. Let us pout it in another sports context. You presently run around the track, n lap per day. You want to run three days of consecutive marathons at the end of the month.. Does that sound possible to you? Soccerref Edit Justify it as you wish. Start out, and see how far you get. Report back and let us know how you fared. And, yes... you can compare running with cycling. The other name for the Century ride is the "cyclists marathon'. One hundred mile rides is a significant effort. Back to back 100's require more than just a passing knowledge and fitness level. Good luck.

Sorry to tell you this but 5 miles per day 5 days per week won't even come close to preparing you for 150 miles per day for three consecutive days. I trained much harder than that for my first 100 mile ride and it still took me over 7 hours. Anyone who could handle 150 miles per day within the next month would already know that they could do it. That takes an extremely high level of conditioning. You don't have enough time to get to that level. You could maybe do 50 per day for 7 days but even that is probably pushing it.

uh no not 150 miles a day MAYBE 40-50 do this try it one day see how far you get training for 150 miles a day well just don;t do it that way maybe if you ride for a few months you can build to 75 a day 150 a day even if you could, it would leave no time for anything else try 10 days wle

It's safe to say that you will never make it. Anyone that would be able to ride those distances won't have to ask. You can't get in shape by riding 5 miles a day. It would take you 2 years to get into shape.

Five miles a day isn't even long enough to get warmed up...Be sure to take a fully charged cell phone with you to call someone to pick you up when you realize this all wasn't a good idea to begin with.

I agree you won't be able to do the whole thing in the time you have to train. Now, I don't know the trains in those countries, but it is Europe and they are great with bike in general. So my recommendation is that you bike as far as you can over your 4-4.5 days, and just plan to train the last part. I did something like this in France, but over a month where we road in an area then train to the next region. [We put our bikes on the train when we rode in to the last town for an area, have a nice evening in town and catch the train to the next region. Our bikes were always there waiting for us.] You'll just need to study the train maps and schedules so you can get to a town the evening before you need to be in Stockholm.

You got a lot of the brains telling you that it can't be done. And it can't, not by people without much more training than you have. Today I did 45 miles, Thursday 37 miles, Tuesday 25 miles, I am a recreational rider too. I have done 400 miles in the last month and a half or so. The max I have ever done in a day is 70 miles. I will do some centuries later on the summer. I don't think I could do it as you plan it, and I wouldn't want to. What you are proposing is professional level riding. You will need a van just for spare parts. Do it in 10 days and enjoy the ride and take pictures. What is the purpose of going there if you will be seeing only asphalt?

Think about it man, you ride like 35 MILES A WEEK. Id make it 10 days, coz then you gotta stay on track but theres no real pressure.
