What is a good mid level Mountain Bike?

Could $300 perhaps turn my decent mountain bike into something I can take on an intermediate level trail?

  • I have and Avigo Assault 26" mountain bike. Being that I got it from Toys 'R' Us, I don't think it's much of a force to be reckoned with. My bike is very sturdy (even a bit too heavy) so I feel like it has a lot of potential. I don't intend to ride anything extreme as I like in NYC so nothing like that exists here, but there are some intermediate trails around here and I'm wondering if $300 can transform my decent bike into a good, rough trail rider. But if I HAVE to, I'm willing to save $600+ for something crazy. The question is, do I HAVE to?

  • Answer:

My only caution to the wind around riding it till it breaks is to make sure it doesn't break. Whatever money you spend to fortify your bike to succeed at all obstacles thrown at it, is money well spent. Who needs a broken arm to heal to then decide to purchase a better bike? Another thought is to ride the Avigo Assault until you need a better performing bike relative to better skills versus the purchase of a better bike to ride better. Certainly it must be good enough to train. Best.

I would just ride it. $300 is not going to make a dent, and you will spend more money in labor or tools than the bike is worth.

For 300 dollars, you can go on craigslist and find yourself a nice used Specialized Rockhopper.

Oh hai thar

Just ride until it breaks. If something breaks that is repairable for little money then you spend the money. If the repairs will cost more than a new bike then you get a new bike. In the mean time, your bike may be appropriate for your riding and the intermediate trail, so you just save your money.

no but $300 would get a pretty good used bike if you have time luck and knowledge used mt bikes are actually pretty cheap for what they are road bikes are in much more demand usually so that is some luck for yuo right there,.. you don;t need a road bike wle

For $600 you could buy a decent used hard tail mountain bike off of craigslist.
