Single Speed Bikes: SE bikes?
-
I'm looking to buy a new bike, something I can ride for now and improve on as I get the money too. I love the bike shop down the road from me, but they really only specialize in SE bikes. I was looking over the specs of the SE premium ale, SE lager, SE draft and SE draft lite. i'm not looking to spend a fortune on a crappy bike, so I was wondering if going with the SE brand is the way to go. I'm kinda turned off to the SE Draft and Draft Lite because of their HI-Ten Frame, but ideally something around that price would be perfect. Then again, I really like the SE premium ale and the SE lager isn't too bad. Does anyone have any experience with these bikes? Would a different brand/model be a better investment?

Answer:
Sorry, don't know anything about this brand. If you want to buy a bike that will allow you to improve, don't buy a single speed. Single speed will limit your riding experience. Example. Evening ride with a group of very good riders. One excellent rider was on a fixed gear bike. Me and my partner were on my tandem. We hit a section that was a long slight downhill with a tailwind. Up ahead was the single speed rider, pedaling like a man possessed. He was running about 21 mph. We passed him doing 35 mph. All because of having multiple gearing. My tandem has a 54/11 high gear. Normally I couldn't keep up with this guy on a multi-speed bike. But the single speed limited his ability to go any faster. Something to think about. Good Luck

Well I did look up the SE premium ale to see what kind of bike it was. It got me laugh when I saw that the bike seat had a Bottle Opener. But before we can try to recommend a bike for you, we would need to know what you are training for? Are you looking for a fixed gear or a single gear? The Specialized Langster would be competitive with the bikes you were looking at. I'm know its a single speed though i hear you can get it as a fixed but I'm not 100% sure on that.

don;t get a bike thinking 'i will improve it' that is a waste of time and money unless you have access to free parts the SEs i have seem, seem decent, and inexpensive, though also heavy IIRC, the draft doesn;t come with flip flop hub wle

I love my Surly Karate Monkey and highly reccommend it for SS use. Also look at the products from Redline like the Monocog which is about half the price.
