What's the best bike for the trails?

After a day of riding trails with a mountain bike whats best to clean?

  • Answer:

You can hose off tires and the frame if you want, but I prefer not to as I dont like a lot of my movable parts to have water on them and its hard to get it all dry. If i'm motivated, I spray the frame with simple green and wipe it down (i just buy a big box of disposable rags and industrial size bottle of it at home depot). Also after riding, spray alcohol or simple green lightly on the front shock or on the rag and wipe off the dirt. Then spray some silicone lubricant or whatever on the shocks and pump them up and down a few times. I usually relube my chain and spray down the pedals and other moving parts every few rides depending on how much dirt/dust/sand i've been riding on (sometimes have to do it after one ride). If you have rim brakes, you can wipe off the rim to get rid of any residue if you notice your brakes slipping or you can wipe off disc rotors with alcohol although I never need to do this. Hope that helps as your question is a bit vague.

As someone said, your crotch needs attention. Seriously, if you ride often, saddle sores are in your future. Cleanliness helps prevent em. For yr bike, chain, rims are top priority. Frame can be let go unless you can't stand it looking filthy. But chain must be attended to (many good chain cleaners out there) and rims if you have rim brakes. The grit will eat up the brakes and the rim metal itself, leading to need to replace the wheels eventually. If you have disk brakes, never mind.

At first a shower from the hosepipe to wash off all the big mud and than you should clean the frame with a cloth. when all the dirt is off that's it! But several times 2-3 times a month (depends how often you ride your bike) you should clean it more in detail. That means also to clean the pinion and derailer (if you have click pedal these too) with a brush and put some oil on these parts incl. the chain.
