Is it legal to ride my pocket bike in cali?

  • I have one of those electric pocket bikes that are very quiet. the top speed is about 18mph but now indays its like 15mph. I'm 19yrs old with only just a class c lisence so no motorcyle license. i live in a pretty getto type of neighborhood(not too getto becuase 50/100 homes are decent, some really nice, and some just kind dirty) but ya we get cops cruising by every now and then and holicopters flying over at least once a month. and well, I just moved here and wasn't sure if i could ride my pocket bike in piece without gettting a ticket. i ride on the neighbohood streets that are alwasy quiet and my pocket bike hardly makes any noise. I don't wear a helmet, but i was thinking maybe i should. also, sometimes i ride it with both my little sister and little brother at the same time. they are small and if i sit at the very back of the pocket back, they both can fit. if that is calling out for a ticket, could i ride it in a col da sac that i live in with out getting bothered by cops?

    Pocket bikes are illegal on the roads of California and all other states of the Union. California has specific laws regarding pocket bikes. This from the CHP website "Pocket Bikes (Mini Motorcycles) Operation permitted on private property only. Illegal on all roads, sidewalks, bikeways and riding or recreational trails. "

Anne It has nothing to do with where you live. Pocket bikes cannot be registered in California. Thus, they are illegal to ride on public streets. They are to be ridden only on private property, with the permission of the owner. The police will be ticketing you for the violation, and if riding double... the kids better be riding with helmets!
