Which snowboard helmet to buy?

Do I need to buy a helmet with a visor for mountain biking. Or can I just get a regular helmet.?

  • For those of you who are bikers out there. Is it ok if I buy a Giro Atmos helmet for mountain biking or should I get a helmet with a visor such as the Giro Athlon helmet. I'm more concerned about safety rather then looks. Which helmet do you guys believe would be safer to take on the trails. Also, whats the point of having a visor anyway? Please answer ASAP

    I have helmets with and without visors and use them interchangeably on road and trail. Anyone who would give you crap about something like that isn't a cyclist. Their opinion doesn't matter.

Usually a helmet with visor is designed for mountain biking. Road helmets tend to have larger vent holes and less rear coverage. This may make you more vulnerable to getting poked in the head by branches or rocks in a fall. The visor does very little and is mostly cosmetic. Both helmets meet the same safety standards by law. Weight and cooling are my primary concerns as long as you feel you have adequate coverage for the type of riding you will be doing.

A friend of mine has a helmet like this for mountain biking http://www.bestbikehelmets.org/images/Full%20Face%20Mountain%20Bike%20Helmet.jpg because when he falls, he says he usually hits his chin so that full face protection was really important to him.

Visor just break off after a year. It marginally protects a against glare. I think it more cosmetic and certainly does not increase the safety.

That visor does two things - at least. #1) It may help keep the sun out of your eyes. #2) While riding through tree limbs & small branches, the visor will deflect them UP - away from your face.
