What type of bike should I get?

  • I'm a Girl and I'm 14 years old, and my birthday will be sometime next year in March. I really want to get a new bike but I don't know what type of bike to get. Either a Raleigh Chopper, Or a BMX. I've seen quite alot of teenage girls riding Choppers but they all look either my age or younger, and I would really like a bike that would last me a good couple years at least. I think a BMX would be quite fun to ride aswell and I like the fact of having the stunt pegs on it so I can give my friends lifts and things. I havn't seen many girls with BMX's though, although I saw one today actually. For some reason, the older I get, the more younger the chopper feels for me, whereas I know the bmx is great for anyone any age to ride, but I don't know. What do you think I should do? :S

  • Answer:

Raleigh Choppers and BMX bikes are good for any age person that wants and feels good riding bikes, I can't believe that Raleigh is making a new Chopper which the originals are real collectors bikes even here in the US by people who are in their teens to adults in their 40's-50's and Raleigh is making new ones which is cool news to me. Either one is a great choice but it helps to inspect and try both out before you choose with permission from where your getting them at.

Try riding a few different styles of bike either from friends or from a shop that allows test rides, so you can get an idea what you enjoy riding, both how it looks and how it feels. Try out a BMX, a mountain bike, a hybrid bike, maybe even a beach cruiser? Have fun!

There is nothing wrong with a BMX bike. You would not use it for long distance commuting, for instance. It is isn't a bike for say, past age 25 or 30.

Choppers are for younger riders. No doubt about it. However, you want something to last you a couple of years. No problem. First question. What sort of riding do you do? This is important because it will have a lot of bearing on what you ask for. BMX are good bikes for pulling stunts. So if you want to go to the skate park and grab some air - bingo. However, if you actually want to use this for any sort of day to day riding it is nasty. You have a jump sadle, designed to be grabbed by the knees, not for sitting on. You either have to do all of your riding standing up, or wear your knees as ear rings. But, if you want to ride a bmx there are several good candidates. If you want to go quickly on roads, then get yourself a road bike with skinny wheels. Its what they are designed for. If you want to get about in comfort, a hybrid is not a bad choice. If you want off road, get a mountain bike (Hardtail unless you want to spend upwards of £800 on a susser that works). So a bike is a tool. Find out what you want if for and go and get that type. What's your budget? Again this is important since it may dictate what you get and where you get it. OK. Bikes that I recommend. At 14 you will be good for the older sizing on childrens bikes or a small adult frame. Sizing is important, but get the bike you need now, rather than one that is too big for you and you will grow into. For childrens bikes I recommend: http://www.islabikes.co.uk/bike_pages/luath700lrg.html Stonking bike with good kit and a serious frame. For BMX I would say these guys: http://inspiredbicycles.com/ If it is good enough for Danny Mac.... Or a bit of retro style. Tweed and retro bikes a back in fashion, so something like this: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/dawes/duchess-2011-womens-hybrid-bike-ec018638 A more practical hybrid: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/sirrus-sport-2011-hybrid-bike-ec023997 This is a good mountain bike. Nice upgrade potential: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/hardrock-sport-disc-2011-mountain-bike-ec024137 Hope this helps Luck

There is BMX and there is the Eastern Ace of Spades – Shear quality for around $600. And the chrome finish is to die for. You may read some jealous reviews by people who do not have one or do not know how to keep a chain snapped down on a 10 set, this bike put simply is a class above its price suggests. The Ace of Spades is a bike that loves aerial action even without you attached. It is light weight and has robust gleaming out of that gorgeous shiny Chromoly frame. Slam it down and it is every bit as strong as some of the most expensive brands.
