Is a 24t Sprocket compatible with a 16t rear cassete?

40t Sprocket and 16t Rear Cog. How small can I go Sprocket wise before I have to change cog/Crank?

• In my previous question I asked how I could find out what size sprocket my Monterey Vibe 360 had. Now that I know this I would like to know what the smallest size sprocket I can go is before i have to change either the Cog on my back wheel or my Cranks. My front Sprocket size is 40t and my rear Cog size is 16t. any help would be appreciated. Thanks to anyone with answers. Samuel

  what the smallest size sprocket I can go is before i have to change either the Cog on my back wheel or my Cranks? on the montery vibe 360, the cranks are one piece, and the sprocket is mounted directly onto them. this meant you can make the sprocket as small as you would ever want just by removing the crank from the bike, and undoing the lock-ring and swapping out the sprocket then re-installing them back on the bike. changing the sprocket size doesnot directly affect the cranks, of the "rear cog" ( freewheel) but it will effect your gear ratio. why do you want to make the sprocket smaller? making it smaller ( less teeth ) will make pedaling easier, but you will go slower at a set rpm. - and a small change in sprocket size can effect your gear ratio quite allot! if you want to keep the same ratio, but have a smaller sprocket size (for looks, or ground clearance for tricks) you will need to change the rear cog, http://www.bmxultra.com/downloads/flash/gearchart.htm has a full list of ratios for different sprocket/freewheel variations for various wheel sizes.
