What is a good single speed road bike?

Buy a Bianchi Pista for $600. (far superior in handling than the Raleigh) If you can only spend $200, buy a Torker U-District. I own one and it is a much better bicycle than the price tag indicates. The only thing I think they skimped on were the brakes. Do like I did and replace them with some inexpensive dual pivot brakes. It comes with 48x16 (flip flop) rides really nice. EDIT: There is a simple pleasure in a single speed, not to mention they are light and require a lot less maintenance. Don't knock it until you try a group ride of 30 - 50 miles and pace right along with the multi-geared riders. Too many experts here don't have experience to include in their responses. $200 is enough to spend on your first. Which bike is your last bike? There will be more.

Two points, you will not get good anything new for $200. Second, unless you are racing on a velodrome, there is no such thing as a good single speed road bike. Single speed for road usage became obsolete back in the 1930's. Are you planning on looking at a bike or riding a bike? If the latter, save your money and buy a proper multi-speed road bike. Single speed and fixed gear bikes take all the joy out of bicycling.

save up a little more and build a quality track bike. buy an old frame and get new parts for it.
