Should I buy a bike at Target or a bike store?
-
My dad and I went to Target to go check out a bike. We found a bike for $100.00. I told him the quality is not that great so we went to go check 2 bike stores. We found a bike for $350 and another one for $500. They were really great bikes. But then my dad said that even the $350 bike is too expensive and I should just buy one a Target. But the quality is not good at Target. $350 is very cheap for a very good bike. But my dad keeps assuming to buy one at Target. What should I do?

Answer:
Discount store bikes are called "throw away bikes" because that's exactly what they are. Use them like a disposable lighter. They may be good for a short while (maybe) and then toss them in the trash. I could see a bike from Target if you were 7 or 8 yrs. old. Tell him this... Discount store bikes are assembled in 15 minutes or LESS by non professionals. A bike shop will spend 45 minutes or MORE insuring everything is OK. A real bike shop always offers at least one free after sale check-up/tune-up. Many offer one free year of after sale check-ups. Where I bought my bike - it's good for LIFE! The bottom brackets, the wheels, the rear derailleur, the brake mechanism on all these discount store bikes are usually vastly inferior to a bike shop bike. Many of these discount store bikes have a lot of recalls - especially Roadmaster & NEXT. Ask your Dad what your life is worth. Is the life of his son worth the extra $250? I couldn't afford that kind of $$$ either for my son. But I'm on a slim pension. I found a used 2004 Gary Fisher Tarpon on craigslist for $50 and fixed it up. Total cost with all parts was about $150. It still beats anything from a discount store! I value my son's life.

Buy a used one on Craigslist. Do some research to make sure you don't get ripped off, some people ask too much for a bike. Be patient, check it every day until you find what you're looking for

I'd stay clear of Target and Walmart bike offerings. As a part time bike shop mechanic, I found some department store bikes so "nasty" that I had to tell the customer that it would cost more to have me repair their .... um .... relatively new bike than to just toss it and buy another one. Many department store bikes are pretty nasty brand new off the floor {which is sad in my opinion}. Hit the local bike shops and buy a safe and more reliable bike. The extra money spent WILL be well worth it.

Target and similar stores are fine for kids' bikes, but if you expect to do more than ride suburban streets to school and your friends' houses, a better bike is a good investment. I agree that Craiglist and other placed to get a used bike might be great. One good opportunity might be happening now, as area college students are getting rid of possessions they don't want to pay to ship home. A lot of bikes are for sale where I live. I also agree that you need to do some research and learn what makes a good bike good, including what brands and types/styles suit your needs.

read up on it if you want to seriously ride, you can probably impress and convince dad to go to a bike store he prob thinks you won;t ride it if that;s true, then don;t get one at all assess yourself wle

There are some questions I need to know: how old are you? Are you planning to use this bike for a period of time? Are you going to buy a bike that you may grow out of? If you are going to get a bike that may last you, so say, five years then get the cheaper bike, but if you are planning to use this bike for a very long time and if you are going to ride a lot on it then get the more expensive one. It depends on how you will use that bike.
