How much is a good Hybrid Bike?

How much faster can you ride on a road bike than a hybrid bike?

  • a scott sub 20 compared to a road bike

  • Answer:

The Scott sub 20 is not really a hybrid, it is more a flat bar road bike. As such, for shorter rides under 50 km it would not be really any slower than a drop bar road bike with similar equipment. But once you start doing longer rides, the advantages of drop bars start to kick in. Having multiple hand positions and a lower position while in the drops help increase comfort and efficiency if you are riding in windy conditions.

Depending where you place your hands on the road bike you can gain 1-2 mph with the same effort. http://bikecalculator.com/

Well...there are what's called performance hybrids with the flat handlebar & regular hybrids with a raised handlebar & a more upright sitting/riding position. That fact right there will slow the rider down because of wind resistance. Not to that great of an extent on a performance hybrid - but still noticeable. I know that when I refurbished some old 10 & 12 speed bikes, they went a lot faster than my hybrid - even though they were "lead sleds" compared to today's road bikes. At least 3 to 5 mph I would "guesstimate".
