I can't really ride a bike--is it too late to learn (I'm 45)?
-
I learned how to ride a bike when I was 12 but I only rode it for a summer. Now when I tried to ride a bike that wasn't my height at all I couldn't do it and fell. Does this mean I can't ride a bike ever again? Where is a good place to ride a bike where if I fall, I won't hurt myself? The grass? Is it too late to relearn how to ride a bike? Should I just get a one speed beach cruiser? Are they easier to ride than a hybrid? I plan on riding at the lake and in my condo complex. Thanks.

Answer:
The talent in riding a bike is never lost. As we get up in years, our ability to balance may be a bit off. I am 54 and ride a mountain bike daily. I used to be a beach cruiser in my Lords of Dog Town days in So. Ca. I would recommend riding a bike with 24, or 26 inch (wheels) depending on how tall you are, that has at least 18 speeds. You may not use all gears although it is nice to have them available when approaching a hill. I recommend riding in a park or school yard that has fairly thick turf and use the fence as an assist. Pedal and hold the fence with your left hand and when you feel comfortable, make a right into the open and take it easy in a fairly low gear. Make sure the turf isn't really trashed with holes and other imperfections. Once you have mastered this, the pavement will be a blessing. You will master the bike riding in a few minutes around your condo complex. Just make safety your first issue. When you decide to do the lake thing, make sure you have everything in order. Cell phone, water, and maybe a snack. I don't like fighting with cars for space. If you ride at night, USE LIGHTS in front and back. 99 cent store has simple blinking red lights for cheap. I had to get a headband camp light for the front. This way, when my head turns, the light is shining in the direction I am looking. You will find this really handy. I would also recommend an inexpensive lock for the time being just to insure that your bike will be there when you want it. One more thing. Always carry WATER. I have a bottle holder on my bike and I keep more in a back pack. Maybe we will see one another on the bike trail! Have fun and I hope you ride like the wind.

Find a well mowed flat grassy area. Wear a helmet & additional protective gear if you feel you need it. (knee pads, elbow pads, etc.) If the bike wasn't the correct size for you - no wonder you fell. Too small of a bike & you're all bunched up. Too tall of a bike makes starting & stopping a real adventure. A one speed cruiser usually has only one gear (speed). They are heavy & don't go up hills well. A hybrid is not that different because of the comfy riding position. Just learn how to shift gears. Bottom line...I wish I was ONLY 45 again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You never forget how to ride a bike. Get a comfort or hybrid bike with a step through frame. A bike with gears is a lot easier to ride then a single speed on hills. Go to the local bike shop and get fitted for the correct size frame. The proper size bike is a lot easier to ride and a shop quality bike is lite They also make a relaxed geometry bikes where you can still sit in the saddle when you are stopped and don't have to jump off of the saddle. http://www.wikihow.com/Ride-a-Bicycle

Ginger No you can ride. Try learning on a slight down hill, using tuor feet and legs as outriggers. Coast down. After you have the coasting down, then continue using your feet as outriggers, add some small turns going down and a bigger turn at the bottom. After you have the balance, the coast, and the turns down you can start to add the pedal. And there you go... you are riding. Don't forget to wear a helmet! Soccerref
You can still learn..buy one that you can sit on and still plant both feet on the ground, (not on tippy toes) then scoot around with your feet on the ground, in your drive way until your natural balance comes back then start to pedal..I have taught 6 kids how to ride using that method and not one of em ever crashed.
