Best bmx bike for beginner?
-
I want to get into BMX, unfortunately my old mountain bike isn't going to cut it. What would be the best, fairly cheap bike if i want to use it for street, park and some flatland?

Keep in mind that you can ride street, park, and flatland on a street or park frame but I wouldn't do any street or park on a flatland specific frame unless of course that frame was a Hoffman Strowler. Flatland may be a lot harder for you to learn on a non flatland specific frame but it can be done. Flatland frames have a geometry all their own.Short toptubes ranging from 18" to 19" (some companies offer frames with 19.25" to 19.75" toptubes for the taller guys),chainstays are pretty short and are normally about 12.5" to 13",the wheelbase is shorter, the downtube has more clearance between it and the front wheel so your feet have more room when doing scuffing tricks like squeakers, they have low slung toptubes to make stepping over the frame in tricks like whiplashes easier. You can do street or park on a flatland specific bike but the flat specific parts will break as they are not designed to hold up to the abuse that street and park riders dish out on their rides. Also the frame may break, snap,or crack. I'd sit and think about what style it is you want to do most and choose a bike based on that decision. I'f you must ride flat, street and park on the same frame I would go with a street or park bike that has a short toptube (20.5"), so you don't feel like you have to really stretch into some tricks. Also one thing you should no about flat...the reason you don't see so many people riding flatland is because it is the hardest style of BMX to learn and ride.It can take years just to learn the very basics...but it's oh so rewarding when you learn a new trick or link a new combo! Look at buying a bike with a frame made from 100% chromoly or at the very least a chromoly main frame (main frame = toptube, downtube, seat tube, and head tube or front triangle of the bike) as chromoly tubing is both lighter and stronger then hi-tensile steel tubing of the same thickness and diameter. It isn't necessary to have a chromoly frame or chromoly main frame but if you're going to ride and park or street and jump any ramps or huck yourself down any stairs you'll want a chromoly frame or at the very least a chromoly main frame because it is stronger and lighter then a frame made from hi-tensile steel tubing of the same thickness and diameter. The more parts that are chromoly also the better (and lighter). If you want to ride flatland only I would recommend the 2010 DK Opsis http://www.danscomp.com/101263.php?cat=BIKES Hands down the best bang for your buck beginner flatland specific bike.It retails for $329.99 before shipping and $354.94 shipped, but if you order from danscomp.com and enter promo code 41d5 at checkout then you can get it for only 288.54 shipped...that's a $66 savings! It sports a chromoly main frame, chromoly handlebars,3 piece tubular chromoly cranks with sealed Mid BB,Four knurled aluminum flatland specific pegs,gyro/detangler,28t sprocket,14t freecoaster COG,and weighs in at 27 pounds. If not wanting to ride mainly flatland or only flatland I would recommend a good park/street inspired complete like a DK Helio or DK Kvant or a FIT STR 2.5 or a FIT TECH 2.5 or a Stolen Heist or Stolen Sinner. You can find them all at danscomp.com Sure they are $340+ bikes but enter promo code 41d5 at checkout to see what your discounted price is....besides,decent bikes aren't had for much less then $350ish.

If anything, avoid the department store selections _ Walmart, Target, other places like that. As I discovered from previous experience, their quality is not that great and replacement parts can be hard to obtain. As far as brand is concerned, what ever your local bike shop has should be fine.
