What is a good big comfy bike seat?

Bike seat that is comfy for a woman?

  • I've recently moved to an area with beautiful outdoor trails all over. My husband and I like to bike ride from our house to the trails and such, but the last time we went, my toosh couldn't take it! We only went about 10 miles, but I was way too sore after. I even have one of those gel seats on top of a decently soft seat. We're looking to possibly get a decent bike for me by the spring/summer next year, because I just have one of those cheapy mountain bikes with non disc brakes and gears that always fail. Is there some kind of seat we should be on the look-out for? Are there different shapes or something that would be more comfortable for a female rider or anything like that?

1 - Gel seats DO NOT work - period. Everyone thinks cushy or soft equals comfort. That couldn't be further from the truth. They usually try to support the wrong area of the behind. Plus, they are SOOO wide, they sometimes cause chafing & more irritability. #2 - If you haven't ridden a bicycle in a while, your butt muscles are not used to it. It would be like asking me to walk into a gym & lift 350 lbs. over my head. Can't be done. It takes time & a steady schedule to build up to it. #3 - Ever notice most people refer to them as "seats", while bike enthusiasts refer to them as "saddles"? Saddle is the correct term because that's exactly what it is. A seat will usually have some kind of back support. Bike saddles are more like an English horse riding saddle. Check with your local bike shop (not discount store) and see what they have to offer. Also browse through places like Amazon.com. I'm placing a link below to one of their more popular saddles sold. Notice it is narrow & has a center cut out relief section? Also, PLEASE see & read link from the late Sheldon Brown.

You need to ride more and get use to the saddle. Cycling shorts will help a lot they will have padding in the contact area and provide support for your legs. A good bike that fits and is properly adjusted will be much more comfortable. The best saddles are firm and support your sit bones. Soft saddles and gel covers will cause more problems because they put pressure on the soft tissue where the blood vessels and nerves are. http://sheldonbrown.com/saddles.html

Check a local bike shop for a women's 'comfort' seat

There are lots of female-specific saddles. You can look them up on Amazon but ultimately you will have to go to a bike shop and test them in person because bike seats are like shoes. The way I've done it is order a bunch online, and then try them out one by one, but that's not cost-effective for the average bear. (I don't mean you're a bear, it's just a cartoon.) And plus, most of the people answering questions here are guys (including yours truly) and we have all that 'junk' so we're probably not the best people to give you a specific recommendation.

Bella First, having a sore backside is normal. Just like every new exercise program you are going to get sore,. In cycling it becomes evident that two areas, kegs and butt have become terribly out of shape over the years. Secondly, you need a good pair of padded cycling shorts. Gel pads and big soft saddles do not work to keep the pain away .... they make it worse. Either a good pair of mtn bike or road shorts will do. That and more saddle time to get in shape is all that will do it. Add a heating pad on low, and liquid advil gel caps, and you will take the edge of it... P.S. it is NOT the bike! It is not the seat! It is no shorts and out of shape! It is amazing how out of shape the legs and butt get from just walking around...... Soccerref

http://www.cptips.com/saddle.htm http://www.jimlangley.net/crank/bicycleseats.html Buy a decent seat designed for off-road use, any good bike shop will be able to advise you on which one to buy; expect to pay around $50 to $70. Ditch the gel seat cover, you don't need it, just keep riding and your butt muscles will become much better able to cope with the abuse, horse riders have exactly the same problem. A suspension seat post might give you some relief: https://shop.sunrisecyclery.com/item-picture/16487/picture For trail riding buy either a good quality hybrid or an entry-level MTB. Hybrids are cheap and good for on-road use but mountain bikes (MTB's - multi terrain bikes) are more compact, stronger and focused for off-road riding. With all those lovely trails to play on I think you should look at spending $1000 on each bike if you can afford it.
