Can you recommend a good bike for me?

Can anyone recommend a good bike seat (see comments)?

  • I've been riding 10-15 miles every day. My legs are willing to go further but the seat is killing my "you know what". Can anyone recommend a good seat for long, comfortable rides? I've done as much as I can with the seat that came with the bike in terms of adjustments and added padding.

  • Answer:

Comfort is certainly related to the type of seat, but also to what you wear. Seats are 'personal', in that everyone has somewhat different anatomy, and therefore different seats will work for different riders. Bike stores know this and will generally let you exchange the seat if you don't find it comfortable after a few days (assuming it isn't marked up). Find a store with at least 5-6 different seats to choose from. Until I got to know what general shape of seat worked for me I had to try several different styles to get moderately comfortable ... and a couple of variations on the best general shape before choosing one. I have both Fizik and Terry saddles ... and if buying again I'd probably choose the Terry because of the cutout that reduces pressure on "soft tissue". You need to choose by type of riding and also by whether for a man or woman ('sit bones' are in different places for men and women ... so choose whichever applies). Note that gel seats look comfortable, but interfere with efficient peddling. A good seat is improved by wearing padded bike shorts. I personally like Sugoi, Garneau and Performance bib shorts ... but again it's a personal preference thing.

No clue without knowing what kind of bike you ride. Adding padding doesn't always help. One hint: the farther you want to ride, the more you have to lean forward to take the weight off your rear end.

You say added padding have you tried padded shorts. Specialized sonoma gel saddles are soft but not totally silly for about £35

go to walmart and get a seat pad its very convorbull

Bike seats(saddles)are very personal things. What works well for one is torture for another. Generally, firmer saddles are more comfortable for the long ride than softer saddles. The venerable Brooks hard leather saddle is the best example of this. Many swear by it. But first, you gotta break it in, and this can take a long time. And the cost is $100 plus. Velo makes good, padded saddles in a variety of models, priced in the $30 range, that don't require any breakin or upkeep. About all you can do is to try different saddles in the hopes of finding the least of the evils. You may never find one that's totally comfortable. Good luck.

A big, wide seat with layers of padding is not what you need. You need a saddle that puts your body weight where it was designed to go -- on your "sit" bones. I suggest you start by going to a bike store and buying a Terry Liberator X for women or the Liberator Y for men. This is one of the classic saddles that has relieved cycling comfort problems for a multitude of people. One of its best features is the Terry comfort guarantee. If you don't like the saddle, you can return it in 30 days. My girlfriend just bought a Terry Rosie saddle and really likes it. I have a Terry saddle on all of my bikes. HTH

You don't say what kind of bike you ride and how you ride it. #1. Get some quality padded shorts. #2. Don't add any kind of padding/gel to your saddle. #3. Get a Brooks leather saddle that looks as if it is suitable for the kind of riding that you do. It might be a small racing type saddle or a sprung saddle that your granddad used to use. #4. Buy a tin of Brooks saddle food, a saddle adjustment spanner and a waterproof cover for the saddle for when it is raining and you are not sat on the saddle. #5. Spend several months bedding the seat in and you will have the perfect saddle for you.
