How to install Derailleur?

How to install a rear derailleur?

  • I recently bought a Murray Baja mountain bike it works great except I needed to repaint it (it was old and not pretty) everything went well until I went to put back together the bike. I cannot remember how to install the rear derailleur for this bike, it is a Shimano RD-TY10 ... I have looked for a manual on the website of shimano but apparently they do not make this derailleur anymore... The most complicated thing I believe is because this model does not have the derailleur hanger and there is a nut and bolt that I marked in the attached image that I have no Idea where it should go. does anybody know how to install this thing? http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f315/paintball31390/IMG000083.jpg (Bike is upside down in picture) Thanks!

  • Answer:

very easy. remove the cable form the the old derailleur then remove the lower pulley (usually a 3mm or 4mm hex)...and then remove the bolt that hold it to the hanger(5mm hex). then do the same but back wards to install. remove the lower pulley first. then bolt it to the hanger and set the chain in place....and put the pulley back on... and reset the cable and set with the barrel on the derailleur. EDIT::::: damn i did not read it through all the way...yeah that is only on cheap derailleur now so you need this Adaptor claw you can buy it here but the rest works the same, with removing the pulleys and such http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/derailers-rear.html good luck let me know if you have another questions
