Can anyone recommend a good road bike for a beginner?
-
I'm a runner who's recently come down with a knee injury and thought this would be a good opportunity to introduce my self to the world od cycling. Can anyone suggest a few good bikes i should consider? Is the second hand market a good option or would i be better off paying out for something with a guarantee? Thanks in advance

Answer:
You want to get a good shop quality bike that fits. You should be able to stand over the frame and have 1-2 inches of clearance. With your hands on the hoods the front axle should line up with the handlebars. There is nothing wrong with a used bike but I would get something with sti shifters. That is shifters on the hoods with the brake levers. Cycling is easy on the knees if the bike is adjusted properly and you spin in an easy gear.

Carrera virtuoso is an amazing bike for an amazing price, especially second hand. But if you buy it new from Halfords you can get a 6 week check up for damage and repairs

Second hand bikes that are in a good nick are not a bad buy... Try eBay and ask questions... That's where I got mine from. Don't buy new, a rip off. However, do go to bike shops, try bikes, get measurements done & find the correct size etc and get your mind set on a bike then go buy it 2nd hand provided it is in a good nick as mentioned above. I recommend Specialized bikes & Giant Bikes for Road Use, they're strong & durable. Also recommend front suspension for them potholes and disc brakes for the idiotic pedestrians who decide to walk in front of you without looking. A helmet, a hi vis top, gloves & lights are strongly recommended too. Especially a helmet. As a cyclist, you'll soon discover you are the most hated on the roads by everyone except other cyclists. :-) Good luck & be careful with your knee. Take it easy budd.

If you are getting into cycling because of knee injuries, you need to start with a properly fitted bike. Buying second hand, your choice of bikes in your size may be limited, so you may need help from an experienced cyclist to help you choose. Without specific body measurements, it isn't a good idea to recommend a particular model, and in any case, in a certain price range most bike companies produce bikes with very similar overall quality. A really good bike shop can make a big difference by helping you choose a bike that fits your needs and budget, then assembling, adjusting and fitting it for you

Consider review of this link for added perspective on your knee injury. Great article to put everything into perspective. http://www.roadcycling.com/training/Cycling_Stretches_and_Flexibility_Exercises_002446.sh The Trek 520 touring bicycle is one of the more storied bikes on the road. While you may not care to race, if you enjoy riding moving forward your choice of a bikes overall competence will become increasingly relevant. Trek's 520 is the stuff that legends are made of, this legend still lives among us. It really is that good, for anyone who is on the near or far side of the bicycle experience continuum, you will find it hard to beat. You will know this to be true when you keep coming back to Trek 520, if the price range is within your means. Best. Best.
Tom I have no left knee. Don;t believe these guys. Cycling is a great regimen for those with bad joints and muscles issues! There is so little impact that we can keep cardio in our life! You are right on issue #2 as well. A good used bike by Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, or Giant will be a good choice. You can get a much better bike, for pennies on the dollar. Just make sure that you get the proper size bike AND get it fitted by a local shop. Just as in running there are several NEED TO KNOWS. They include spinning and shifting. It is THE primary thing that new riders hould learn. You can ask later on a subsequent Y/A question. Here is a frame size site to get the proper size bike. Just select the Road Bike type, and complete the data. http://www.ebicycles.com/bicycle-tools/frame-sizer Soccerref
