How Much Is 1950 Schwinn Bike Worth?

Is the Schwinn Ditch 3.0 a good bike?? Is it bike store quality?

  • I am looking for a bike that will last me a good long time. My brother has a bike that was bought at a bike store almost 7 years ago. He beats it daily and it still runs good with a couple tune ups here and there. I want to get a good lightweight bike that will run strong. Is the Schwinn ditch 3.0 a good durable bike with bike shop quality? I saw it at costco and it seems to have good components, but will it last?? Should I go to the bike store and pay a fortune? My budget is $400 max. I am hoping to get a bike for $300 though. I had a hard time trying to size myself on the computer. I am 5.9" and 150ibs, what size would I most likely be?? I was also looking at the 2008 mongoose tyax comp for $369.00. But the sites I've looked at didn't tell me if it was aluminum or not. I am shooting for an aluminum bike, but would the 2008 tyax be worth it even if it is not aluminum?? What is the weight of the tyax? Note: I am not an avid cyclist that bikes everywhere I go. I will use this mainly for cycling around the neighborhood and some 2-3 mile rides. If you have any suggestions please list. Thank you for your time.

  • Answer:

That Schwinn Ditch is better off left in the store where you found it! It IS NOT bike shop quality at all and you will get no service after the sale if you buy it! Now as for that Tyax, I sell this one at Performance bike and it IS a low end bike for the Mongoose line but it IS a bike shop quality bike and whoever you buy it from (a bicycle specific shop) will guarantee it 100% and you DO GET service after the sale with it and even if it were speced lower than that Schwinn Ditch you would still be better off buying it! It is NOT dept store quality- it is better than that. The Tyax would probably suit you best as the fork has a lock- out feature that is best for roads and the bike is a hardtail which is best for your on road use and you will have that flexibility of dual purpose use too. The Tyax IS an aluminum frame bike- no steel in the frame at all. Remember that any bike will last a long time if and only if you take care of it and learn how to properly do that otherwise Nothing will last for long. The Tyax will last you forever if you maintain it and for your short rides it will do you very well.

The Schwinn Ditch is a department store bike. It is going to be heavy and the shocks are going to eat any energy you apply to the pedals. The Mongoose is a little better but it's still a department store bike. Go to a bike shop and look at some of the bikes and take a test ride before you decide on buying anything. You can find something at a shop for around what you would pay for the Mongoose. If you just want to cycle around the neighborhood you may not need a mountain bike. A hybrid may be a better choice if you don't want to ride in the mud. A hybrid will be faster on the pavement, lighter and can still be ridden on hard packed bike paths like rail trails. I am about 5' 8" and a bought a Forge Saranac last summer and it's been a great bike it is a 17.5 inch frame and it felt a little cramped but after a few adjustments it feels pretty good. I think my next choice for a low priced bike would be the Forge M Street in a 19 inch frame. It would have more room then the 17.5 saranac and be more efficient because it doesn't have shocks. It's up to you but if you don't need a bike for the rough stuff you may want to consider a different bike.

Not to burst your bubble but Schwinn's and Mongoose's are not usually very good bikes. It really depends how you use them. For around the price your willing to pay I would look into getting a Specialized Hardrock. they are very good for traveling distances and are MUCH more durable then the schwinn. Try to stay away from bikes at Target, Costco, Walmart, etc....They tend to be really cheap with low end components.
