Where can I find a pretty good bike made of steel / chrome alloy for under $125, preferably mountain bike?
-
I need a steel or chrome alloy bike, not aluminum. Even though aluminum and other materials are light, they are not as strong and cannot handle extreme pressure as well. I prefer mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, or road bikes. I will ride through the mountains only during the summer and on road during other seasons. I live in California.

Answer:
The only way you'll find this is by watching the local papers or going to flea markets or yard sales. There are a gigantic number of bikes for sale that were purchased with good intentions but were almost never ridden... but you have to look for them. You should be looking for an ATB, or all terrain bike. These are for riding on the road, and off road on milder trails depending on which bike you get.

well, save up some more $$. I wouldnt feel safe on a $120 mountain bike. My advice would be to invest in something that's a little more money. Also, why do you want a steel frame? Aluminum frames today are made from 7005 alloy, and stack up very well compared to the durability of steel. Plus, they wiegh alot less. Nowadays, youll only find steel on a cheap walmart bike, ir a top notch downhill bike made for extream offf road conditions.

For 125 bucks you are only going to find cheap, poorly built and poorly equipped high tensile steel bikes. If you are really looking for something durable, be willing to spend more than 125. Maybe look at used chromoly steel bikes on Craig's List or at bike shops that sell used bikes. "Mountain bikes" at Walmart and Target are not really made to go off-road. Beware.

125 bucks will get you a frame you will need at least 400 more for the rest of the bike

Anything that new sells for $125 is going to be a POS. "Decent" bikes start at around $300. For $125 you'll have to get one at walmart that is put together by someone making minimum wage that doesn't know what they are doing!

1) You won't find a high quality, new bike for so little. 2) Start looking for used bikes. 3) Aluminum is stronger (pound for pound) than steel. Aluminum can handle very high pressures. Who ever told you that Aluminum is inferior was wrong. Aluminum is less ductile than steel. So, if you bend aluminum, the frame is likely broken while you might be able to bend steel back into position with little strength lost (or slightly stronger and more brittle).
