What type of bike should I get?

What type of bike should i get? (please read addition information below about what im using it for)?

  • i need to get a new bike. it is generally for leisure, although i do take it pretty seriously. i plan on doing several bike tours. I have a mountain bike now that i use but i thought considering the amount of road riding i do, i should get one of those hybrid bikes. Are hybrids good bikes? will they work well for a long trek? how bout for mountain biking? are the hybrids good for that? would it make more sense for me just to get a road bike? is it frowned upon to do bike tours with a mountain bike?

  • Answer:

get a hybrid bike. they are great for long treks. i wouldnt do heavy mountain biking with one but they are fine for some off roading.

You want a touring bike for doing bike tours, you don't want to use a bike that has shocks or requires an up right seating position all of the time. There is nothing wrong with having several bikes. I have several different bikes and use the one that fits the riding I want to do at that time, it's a lot more enjoyable that way.

you will need a touring or road bike for touring and your mountain bik4e for rough terain and mountain biking. You could do a tour on a mountain bike but you will struggle because you have twice the weight with the bike it is not going to be designed for road and touring!

As you're interested in touring, go to www.crazyguyonabike.com and learn all about it. Ideally, you'd tour on a touring bike like a Surly Long Haul Trucker or a Trek 520. But people tour on just about everything, including mtbs. A lot depends on your budget and tolerance for less than perfection. I have a hybrid for local riding on rough roads and a custom touring bike I use for everyday riding on smooth roads and for touring. The link is to another touring site with lots of info.

I have a hybrid, Giant CRX, I've had it for three years, I ride it 15k to work and back a few times a week. It has an internal hub which means barely any maintenance other than brake pads and cable adjustments. Truly awesome. I've also ridden it 100k distances a couple of times. I got reinforced tyres and haven't had a flat for ages. There are great hybrids on the market, lots of options, so shop around. Your hybrid won't work for mountain biking as it has no suspension. If you're touring on a mountain bike get a pair of slick tyres when you buy it, that will improve your efficiency on the road, as mountain bike tyres have a lot more tread and slow you down. It's not frowned upon to tour on a mountain bike but you will find it heavier than a hybrid or road bike. Hybrids are also great for mounting racks on.

I'd say go get a cyclocross bike. In a sense I guess it is like a hybrid between a mtb and a road bike. I like CX bikes myself for long traveling because it can go on the pavement and on the trails without trouble. I'd get one with drop bars for long distance riding. The thicker (but not too thick) tires can make a great balace between speed and still being able to hop off a curb without so much concern about a taco'ed wheel. Plus CX bikes tend to be kind of light due to having to dismount several times in a CX race.
