Are universal-sized bicycle helmets not as comfortable as S/M/L helmets?

  • I'm going to buy a new bicycle helmet today, and there's one specific helmet I saw on the internet (the Giro Skyla) that I liked, but it's universal-fit, and I ride almost every day so I want it to be comfortable! Obviously I'm gonna try the helmet on before I buy it, I'm just curious as to what you guys think about universal-fit helmets.

    Go to a well-stocked local bike shop and try on all the helmets in your price range. Buy the one that fits and feels the most comfortable regardless of what the box or the labels say. My GF did that and ended up selecting the Giro Skyla. She says there was a huge difference from her older helmet.

It might be more or less comfortable depending on the shape of your head. However, I feel that the shell of a helmet should be match to the rider. Too big or too small is no good. If you head is small and you have to add excessive padding to the helmet, it is less safe as an impact will essentially bounce the head within the helmet.

If it fits you then it will be just as comfortable as any other helmet, I personally really really like Giro helmets, they are a very high quality. Just keep in mind that if it doesn't fit it it won't keep you safe.

Like I mentioned in your other helmet question, a size that fits is best. The universal fits are made to reduce stock and manufacturing costs for the maker and seller. You are the last person on there list to satisfy. If the helmet fits well, universal or not, it's fine. I'm a averaged sized guy and I tried a few universal fits and didn't like 'em. That doesn't mean you won't. There should be at least 6 or 8 helmets in the $20 to $50 range to try at a store that carries a good variety. All these helmets will be safe, your concerns will be fit, cost and looks. Try everyone on you can even $100 ones just to compare.

Lets face it all cycling helmets are uncomfortable so the best bet is try a few. You may find that a "universal" helmet will actually fit you better because it is adjustable.

Universal is only good if you have average-sized head. By now, you should know (ie. kids poking fun at you - "Charlie Brown head", or "pumpkin head", etc) I've been poked fun all my life so I always buy helmet with size L as opposed to universal and helmets with different sizes are usually better quality anyway.

If the "universal fit" happens to suit your head size and shape, great. Use it. But I'm one of those where one size does NOT fit all ... and I use a helmet (and other clothing) sized to suit my body type. Would you wear a shirt that was XXXL (because that will go around nearly everybody), even though you normally wear an S or M? I didn't think so! It's even more important to get the correct size when we're talking about safety gear, like helmets.

No, they are not as comfortable, and do not fit well enough to protect properly in a crash. Go to a BIKE SHOP and get a REAL helmet that fits you; the shop folks will be happy to help you.
