Police bicycle helmets?

I have a question about the bicycle helmet law?

  • I live in Arlington, TX and it is illegal for anyone under 18 to ride a bicycle without a helmet here. But I heard that police officers don't stop you to enforce this law because it is too much paperwork for such a small "crime". I've seen people ride without helmets all the time and I would like to know if this is true. I also know that I should wear one but they look so weird and I'd rather not hear any safety advice...

    You shoud wear a helmet, you dont have to use those XC/AM helmets, you can use these: http://www.huckmonkey.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/flash-test-012.jpg the pro BMXers, and dirt jumpers use those. they are better, dont look as geeky, and you can customize one with stickers to make it look sweet as!

Scientific fact: The street is harder than your head. Wear a helmet even if you think they look weird. Your head is more important than what other people think. Even if you are the best rider in the world, you can get knocked off your bike because of someone else's stupidity or inattention. HTH

Arrange a visit to your local brain injury rehabilitation unit and you will see that there really is no question. Keep in mind that you need as much help as you can when you are trying to protect something that has the consistency of a jello jiggler.

Hey RiKK, Don't wear a helmet. We don't care if you do. I will keep wearing my weird looking one. I pray for natural selection to take effect. (If you don't know what I mean, it is what I mean!)

I don't know about the specific laws where you live, but I do know that police tend to overlook some crimes because of the paperwork involved, so I guess a lot of people think they can get away without a helmet. I suppose that helmets do look weird, but not as weird as someone suffering from brain damage, and having to be looked after by someone else 24/7. Of course, if you die from the brain injury, then it's no longer a problem for you.

Even if you get stopped, it's unlikely that you'll get in serious trouble. Act properly apologetic, say that you didn't know, and promise to buy a helmet first thing. But really, wear a helmet. Bike helmets do look kind of geeky, but the skateboard or snowboard style helmets aren't bad.

I live in DFW too, and so many cities have helmet laws now. The stupid part is, you can ride a motorcycle legally without a helmet. I recommend the helmet, no matter what anyone says about it. It makes you look smart.

if your under 18 ,no problem ride without one. only tools wear those stupid helmets. if the police hassle you tell them you stopped at the store and someone cut your lock and stole it while you were inside.
