Does horseback riding tear up general use trails?

Does horseback riding tear up general use trails?

  • I have noticed that some of my area mountain bike/hiking trails have been decimated by horseback riding ESPECIALLY on the steep decents and inclines. I can tell they're horses because of the Holes and Horseshit where it used to be just footprints and bicycle tire tracks. Has anyone else noticed this problem and how can we deal with it?

  • Answer:

Horses in a very short time ruin any trail do to the way their hooves destroy the trial surface. Where I live the horse-riders NEVER do any trail maint. and are the first to complain about hikers and bikers. The only way to deal with this is thru the property owners and hope for the best as any horse riding group will do its best to blame every one else.

My family and I all love to trail ride with our horses and I also love to ride my mountain bike. Unless someone actually ran in to my horse with a bicycle he would not care about a bike at all but not everyone trains their horses very well. Their are fewer and fewer nice places to get out and ride. I hope that somehow we can all share the trails. Horses make holes that are bumpy to ride over and bikes make a smooth groove that can set up erosion on the hills. Nothing is perfect.

55 and trying

I encountered a horse rider once on my bike coming around a blind corner. Needless to say, the horse lady wasn't too happy and proceeded to line me out for a few minutes about how I need to ride with caution and what not. How was I supposed to know they would be there?

Yes, horses are hard on trails. In Michigan, horse trails are always separate from bike trails. Bikes are never allowed on horse trails and vice-versa. I really didn't know any place would allow both on the same trail for the very reasons you said. I assumed they didn't want horse-bike meetings either. I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a horse on my bike. Why not ask what's happening? Why are horses on hiking/biking trails. Maybe they shouldn't be in the 1st place. It's possible people are horseback riding on trails they should not be on and no one is enforcing it - yet.
