Bike type and size?
-
I am looking for a new bike. I will mainly be using this for riding around a college campus or paved bike trails, however I am kind of interested in a little stunt riding. I don't know if I want the small size of a BMX bike for longer distance riding and I don't know about a larger wheeled mountain bike for trying some jumps or tricks. I am 5'4", small build. I want a bike that is pretty light... the mountain bikes I've always ridden seem to be heavy but then again they are from Walmart. I am on a budget though, definitely! What type of bike would you suggest and wheel size? Like I said I don't know much about bikes, just picked whatever looked good from department/sports stores.

Answer:
This is a really good question and you have provided lots of information to help answer it. First of all, a bike from Walmart or other department store is not indicative of the ride you should expect from a better quality bike. Department store bikes are universally heavy, clunky, and prone to falling apart. Anyhow, as you already know, there is no one type of bike that is ideal for all types of riding. Every bike is a compromise. BMX bikes are light and great for tricks and all-out, short rides, but they are no good for distances. A mountain bike with gears and suspension is great for trail riding and varied terrain. The size and suspension make them tougher to learn tricks on, though. (I have seen folks do some pretty cool tricks on mountain bikes.) A single speed mountain bike with rigid fork (no suspension) is cheap, quite light, good for distance, a capable of tricks. However, they are less than ideal in a hilly area. It is possible to buy a new single speed mountain bike, but most folks save money by converting a used bike to a single speeder. From what you've mentioned, you don't need to even consider a road bike. I really suggest you go scout out your local bike shops and discuss your needs and budget with them. They should be able to show you bikes that are appropriate. Also, if you are interested in a single speeder and befriend your local bike store's mechanics they may be able to hook you up very inexpensively. Hope this helps you out and you find a good bike.

i do downhill biking and i have a kona stinky dee lux so i know a bit about biking, i would suggest a kona stuff, but that might be a little spendy. Maybe a 15 or 14 inch frame with 26 inch wheels. Maybe a small specialized or a Giant reign for stunts.

If you're going to ride for more than a mile I would not get a BMX. I'd go with a MTB. Put some smooth tires on it and you can ride it all day as well as jump and trick on it. A 26" 14 to 15" frame, keep it on the small side if you what to do tricks too.

Norco Mountain bikes, they have good warienty, good for bumps and holes, and nice and smooth, also some people don't go just on trails, so the tires are Trail, BMX, Mountain and Rock.
