Which bicycle would you recommend?

Can someone recommend a good bicycle based on my needs?

  • I live in a suburbian but very high traffic area (northern virginia). I want a bicycle to ride to the gym (about 2 miles) and aso to go on pretty long 20 - 30 mile weekend rides. I'm sure i'll be riding mostly on the road but I want the option of going onto some rougher terrian/paths although I doubt I will ever be doing serious mountain biking (going over fat roots and uneven terrian downhill). Can someone recommend a good starter bike? I will spend up to $1000

Going off of cliffs, curbs, and down stairs will rule out a road bike ! You'll probably need some kind of mountain bike. But mountain bikes are for more off road riding, and not high traffic areas. They're more heavy than a road bike, and alot slower. 20-30 miles is nothing ! Sorry, but there's no such thing as a one size fits all bike. If I were you I'd buy an entry level road bike and stick to paved roads. You can get a Trek 1000 for around $700.

You either want a hybrid bike or a mountain bike with road gearing and tires. Go to a bike shop an look for something like a 29er MTB frame running 700c road tires. It'd probably give you the most options.

Trek makes a good all round bike called the cross over . Around 600.00 buck,s. Go to any bike shop and tell them you want a cross country bike and you don't need a high end bike. You should get one for around400.00. Across country bike is a mountain bike that is also good for the street,s. My choice would be Giant or Specialized Or Kona if you dont mind spending a little more.

Our bike needs are very similar. I bike to work (1 mile), do charity rides and hit the trails with my buddy. I also take my bike on 30-40 mile road rides every weekend. I ride a Giant mountain bike. (Boulder SE). By changing out the tires and a few other modifications I have no problems on road or off. I spent about $250 on the bike and then another $100-150 in upgrades.
