How does a headset on a bike work?

Looking to upgrade a GT Karakorum MT bike to a commuter bike. Need a little help.?

  • I would like to change the handlebars and I guess the headset to give me a more upright riding position. Sort of like the newer comfort bikes. Any suggestions as to what bars and such I'd need? I already have slick tires, a rear rack and light on the bike. I've commuted to work with it a few times as it is now but feel a more upright position would be more comfortable on the road.

  • Answer:

You really need to take it to a bike shop to get set up properly. Since we don't know what rise and reach you have now, we can't suggest what to get. You probably won't need to replace your head set, but a set of riser bars in addition to the higher rise stem might be in order also. The shop will be able to tell you whatould be best suited for your application. I'm guessing you'll _only_ need the new stem.

Get a new stem with a greater rise angle to it, do the same for the handlebar. Some hi-rise bars have a 2~3" rise bend in them.
