Cheap but good exercise bike?

Can i get a good exercise if i cycle once a day? And does it matter what kind of bike i buy?

  • I was thinking of hitting the gym since i want to loose weight this year, however i dont want to have to pay since im on a budget. but im thinking of investing my money on a bmx bike. I havent had a chance to ride a bike for years so i think it will be a good investment, and it would get me out of the house. What would be the long term benefits of cycling if i do it daily for about an hour or so? Also i always loved the look of BMX bikes; however does it matter what kind of bike i buy? Im only going to use it to at the local bike trail, maybe 3-4 miles long?

I hate to give the bad news,,,but NEVER buy a bicycle based on what looks cool or what you think you want. Buy a bicycle based on what you need!. A BMX bike is the lowest on the list tied with a fixed gear bike for enjoyable exercise. I got a kick out of putting two of your sentences together. First, "What would be the long term benefits of cycling if i do it daily for about an hour or so?" And, "Im only going to use it to at the local bike trail, maybe 3-4 miles long?" That's about how long it would take on a BMX bike to cover 3 to 4 miles - an hour - maybe more. For an enjoyable ride on a paved trail, either a hybrid, performance hybrid or outright road bike if you "feel the need for speed". Consult link below from R.E.I. - How to Choose a Bicycle. BTW...they don't even list a BMX bike. For a good high performance hybrid at a damn good price - see 2nd link, also from R.E.I. No - I do not work for them - just believe in them.

Cycling one hour a day will be much better than joining a gym. You have to find a bike that fits you, not for looks. A BMX is intended to play around the park doing jumps and stunts and so. Only kids made of rubber bands can survive that. I would recommend a road bike, not necessarily a racing bike but able to reach 13-16 mph. Try joining a cycling club and participate on organizes rides for focus and stimulus. 3-4 miles is very little, like 15 minutes.

20 miles don;t get a bmx unless you want to get the same work out in 8 miles wle

ride single speed. if you dont have gears to gear down to when you come to a hill you'll have to work harder to get up it, when i started riding i was 350lbs and i'm down to 250 after 3 years of non stop riding my fixie in pittsburgh. ride any chance you get i ride to and from work daily and when i gota go somewhere if its rideable i ride there. you can get a decent singlespeed bike for 400 or less my first bike was a torker u-district and i still ride it daily or you can get an se draft for a little less somewhere around 300 for the se and 350 for the torker

BMX bikes aren't any good for riding longer times or distance. Seat tubes aren't long enough to get in proper riding position. Your knees will explode long before you ride enough to put a dent in your weight. You'll have to get a big boy bike of some sort. For a bike trail, a mountain bike or hybrid would be the appropriate choice.

Get a hybrid bike instead it's a much better workout BMX bikes are more for doing tricks. A 3-4 mile ride is not very long you want to ride for a hour or more.

BMX bike? ROFL.
