Answer:
I'm going to ask you a question or two. Do you "want" a mountain bike or do you "need" a mountain bike? A mountain bike ridden on the streets & paved surfaces is a waste. The knobby tires & suspension parts will only slow you down. Buy a bicycle based on what you "need" - not "want". See 1st link below from R.E.I. - How to Choose a Bicycle. For on the streets, a hybrid, performance hybrid or road bike would be a much better choice. If, in fact you NEED a mountain bike - see 2nd link - How to Choose a Mountain Bike. Hmm...cheap or expensive? Do you want to still be riding it in a year or so? Or would you rather it be for sale on craigslist, hanging on a wall in the garage or worse...in a dumpster? Choice is yours.

you mean 'cheap' or 'good'.. you don;t say you need to save money get a good one first ask yourself though, where you will ride the most if on the road, get a road bike even bike paths and most roadside trails are pretty smooth if it is REALLY all off road, get a mtb, but you can always change the tires to smooth ones for unawful road riding otherwise it will be awful esp if the bike has shocks energy suckers wle

Depends on what you intend to do with it. A cheap one takes up space in the garage just as well as an expensive one. If you intend to actually ride it a lot, its better to get a bike that will perform.

What about something in between? I got a not so expensive bike in 1988 for $400 and still use it. Over 10,000 miles so far. Simple way to choose type of bike: If you will use for commuting on the streets more that 3 miles, get a hybrid. If you will use for the road more than 30 miles, get a road bike. If you will jump in the air more than 3 feet get a bike with suspension. I think Diamondback makes great bikes at good price. They cut costs on chainrings permanently attached to the crank that eventually will have to be replaced. Still, mine lasted over 20 years. The crank and chainring replacement with a good quality Shimano was only about $50.

depends do you want to ride cross country, trails, downhill??? if you want a full suspension it will start at around 2K,if you want a hard tail it will start at around 800 for a good one.personally i ride a full suspensipon fsr.which is good for all of the above.the thing thats wrong with cheap bikes is that they have many problems and break easy.per say if you are on a budget,go to craigslist.thats were i got my fsr.its amazing.and its an expert team bike.i got it for around 250....but over all i'd recomend getting a fullsuspension for around like 550 on craigs list.and if your lucky like me you can get it as cheap as hell
