Mountain Bike Tyre Set Up?
-
My 18th is coming up on the 21st, there's nothing I desperately want/need so was thinking about asking for mountain bike tyres amongst other things (depending on price of suggested tyres) due to my current tyres being rather warn and have not been changed in the years that I have owned my bike. I've applied for an adventure sports degree at uni so would like to get into more serious off road and XC. So I'm looking at having grippy/knobbly tyres on one wheel and a slicker tyre on the other that still has decent grip off road. My reason for this is that I will still be riding my bike to college when I get up too late to walk to college, this journey is all concrete/tarmac bar a few metres. I'm wondering whether this it would be better to have the grippier tyre on the front or back? I'm also looking for info on how slick to make the slicker tyre. If you have any preferred tyres or tyre brands, or just any specific tyres that you think i may be looking for, please let me know them and I'll check them out :) If it helps I own a Saracen Trace 1 2008, it's on Mountain King 26x2.2 tyres at the moment. Thanks for your time and help :)

Answer:
Buy tires for the type of riding your are doing, both front and back. If you ride off road you will need tires for the sort of off road riding you do. If you ride on the road, you need tires with little or no tread front and back. If you are on the road, the grippiest tire will have no tread. Tread on a tire is only useful in dirt, snow and mud. If as you say you only ride a few meters off road you should buy smooth tread tires front and back. Mixing two different types of tires is useless, your bike will never handle properly in any conditions on or off road

go for on the front schwalbe smart sam £20.00 and on rear have maxxis high roller or continental explorer £15-20 hope this helps a tad
I didn't see the additional details on your previous but I agree grippier on the front will not make it easy to control in fast turns. My rear says this on the wall: RITCHEY - MAD-MAX 2.1 SEVERE CONDITION 26x2.1 TO FIT 26x1.5-1.75 RIMS. I think the pressure is about 65 PSI. It really can climb. My front is nothing special, just something I picked up for commuting and taking the long way home. CST CORPORAL - Kevlar 1.9 also 60 PSI. Works fine except on single track mudy surfaces.
