Best mountain bike for under £300?

  • Hello, I'm planning to buy a mountian bike. I can't afford to spend much, so I've given myself a budget of £300. There seems to be quite a few decent bikes available at that price. So far, I've kinda decided that I'm going to get a 'Saracen Tufftrax', 2012 model. They're only £220, which seems like a bargain. Also, I know 'Saracen' are a decent make. I was just wondering though, if anyone else knows of anything better within my budget? Something with disc brakes maybe? I might be willing to spend a little more than £300 if it's really worth it. Cheers.

    You won't find a "good" mountain bike with disc brakes at or below £300. If this is the one you're looking at http://www.ukbikesdepot.com/m15b0s2p7030/SARACEN_2012_TuffTrax_Mens_2012 it's not all that great. Very "entry level" made for the streets & very light trails only. If you want a good mountain bike, get one from a REAL bicycle shop. I would recommend either of the two linked below.

If you are really interested in having a go at cycling, your money is much better spent on a used bike. You can't get an entry level mountain bike for that, but you can get a fairly new used one. The understanding being, for what you want to spend, any new bike isn't really a mountain bike, our even a trail bike, but rather a bike that at most can handle a paved park trail, but will be damaged, and possibly dangerous in use on unpaved surfaces.
