Is a 24t Sprocket compatible with a 16t rear cassete?

Is this a sprocket or a cog, (for BMX)?

  • I was looking on ebay for a new sprocket cause mine is ancient and really big, and I found this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CHROME-Freewheel-BMX-Sprocket-16t-NEW-suits-Skyway-/130571405534?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item1e66a988de#ht_500wt_715 is that a cog or a sprocket? it says its a sprocket but it sure doesn't look like one

  • Answer:

Generally, the sprocket is the gear associated with the crank and a cog is associated with the rear wheel. Reminds me of the Jetsons with Spacelys Sprockets and Cogswell Cogs. I have never seen a (front) sprocket with 16T so I imagine it is a (rear) cog. EEEK! It is a rear cog with freewheel. That particular model is NOT REMOVABLE unless it is destroyed. You need to get the removable kind just for peace of mind.

Other answers

Its a freewheel from a old style rear wheel, if you want to change the front cog (chain ring) then you need to replace the rear cog (driver) so you keep the gear ratio correct.
