Genesis Core 30 or Genesis Core 20 for £200 less?

  • I can get the 2011 Genesis Core 30 for £650 (rrp £850), or the 2011 Genesis Core 20 for £450 (rrp £750). I think they're both good deals but are the slightly better components on the Core 30 really worth £200? Or would I be better off getting the Core 20 and buying a few upgrades? • Answer:

The shocks are similar. The Tora does not have a floodgate adjustment. This adjustment is to dampen high speed bumps. So you can tune it so that the shock only actuates on a big bump, and does not actuate on small high speed ones, so you have less bob on like fast sections. Not much difference besides that. Hubs, not much difference. Okay, Deore shifter. I don't see such a big difference with the bikes, to tell you the truth. You certainly can change out to a Deore shifter for a few bucks (I think US is like $50).

Never buy a bicycle now with the intentions to upgrade later. You'll spend a lot more than £200 upgrading the bike because you don't get a discount like bicycle companies do. The parts on the second bike are simply a little better. That's why they cost more. If you plan on riding it a lot over rough terrain & want it to last, get the better bike. If by some chance you plan on mostly street riding, you're looking at the wrong type of bicycle altogether.

It ultimately depends on you. The differences with the fork and other bits certainly make the bike worth the extra money but if you are a novice rider that might not make much difference to you.
