What size mountain bike fits me?

  • I'm between 6' and 6'1" and have an inseam of approximately 29-32". I was thinking of getting this bike http://boulder.craigslist.org/bik/2803674772.html which claims to be a frame of 19.5" My current beat up bike is a "small".. Let's just say I'm past the insertion point for my seat post. Considering I bike to campus and to my classes all day, I think I should get a bike that fits me. I hope that's all the information you need.

    Don't subtract from your pants inseam. Add to it an inch or so. Best way to do it...stand next to a wall & measure from the floor up to your crotch (snugly). Bet it's a lot more than 32". I have a 32" actual cycling inseam at 5' 10" tall. Link below says about a 19" or 20" frame size for a mountain bike. Extensively test ride & inspect any purchase from craigslist. Buyer beware. And if on the streets all the time, look for a good hybrid or road bike instead. Much faster. If you don't know your own height & your own inseam, how can it be possible to give you an exact answer? Approximately 29-32" is a big dif. And from the small photos, doesn't look like a 19.5" frame. More like a 17" or 18". Probably a 20" frame is what you need.. You need a couple of inches worth of clearance from the top tube to the family jewels. Go test ride. That's the real test.

You better measure your actual inseam and use 59% of that for the frame size. Don't guess at your inseam 3 inches is a huge difference. Use 65% for a hybrid bike which is a lot better choice for streets.
