What are the differences between upscale bars and common bars?

How do I change bullhorn bars to drop bars?

  • I'm looking to buy my first road bike. I found a really cheap one I just love online but it has bullhorn bars instead of drop bars which I was originally looking for. People have told me bullhorns are better and vice versa but I just wanted to know what it would take to change the bars if I decided to get drop bars. Is it a simple switch anyone can do themselves or is it a pricey installation?

  • Answer:

It depends on the brake levers you have on the bike, if any. The brake levers that work best on bullhorns won't fit as well on drop bars. Apart from that, you just have to make sure that the drop bars you buy will fit the stem on your bike. Depending on the type of stem it is really a good idea to tighten the bolts on the stem using a torque wrench so that the bolts are all tightened to the same torque. It isn't a hard job, just requires a little care

A link to the bike you are looking at will help. If it has gears it will be costly, if it's a single speed it wont cost near as much. You need to make sure the bars will fit the stem and the brakes will also fit. New brake levers are not very much.
