Answer:
When you went to the Alps, did you rent a bike? Which make and model? Find out and then find out how much that bike would sell for. I bet it wouldn't be 400, probably several times as much. What makes you think you could safely do downhill riding on a bike at that price? Downhill bikes take tremendous punishment and even expensive ones sometimes break. Buying a bike to upgrade is a losing proposition. Aftermarket parts cost several times as much as those same parts on a new bike, plus you already pay for those parts that you take off. Basically you need to spend more for a bike. Think about how much you are prepared to spend on upgrades. Look up the prices of quality components on the internet, it isn't hard to do. Add the price of all those parts to the price you want to pay and see how great a bike you could have bought

Like everyone else says,... you can't buy a D/H bike fro £400 and live to tell the tale. But with a bit of research; by the magic of ebay... there is an online store called "Tingmax" who sell 2nd handparts. I had quick look and you could kit out a Santa Cruz Bullit with triple crown forks.... for £550 schweet.

Spend £400 for a DH bike and you'll enjoy about 30 seconds of cycling. You could get an entry-level hardtrail in sale at that price (got my son a Kona half priced from Merlin Cyles last year). It really does depend on the typr of terrain too, I go to Annecy in France with a Boardman Team and it handles it fine
You wont get a down hill bike for that amount and you cant upgrade it to work either. A full suspension bike for that amount wont take the punishment.
You're on the right track -- go for bikes from the big manufacturers. But try multiplying that budget by at least five or six times if you want to get a real, albeit entry-level, DH bike.
400 quids? Its kinda low but you may find some low priced full sussers in paulscycles.co.uk, winstanleysbikes.co.uk and wiggle.co.uk---
