What is maximum gear ratio?

What gear ratio is good for popping wheelies on my fixie?

  • Hey what's up guys I got a skinny Benny fixie with a 46/16 gear ratio with 700-28 tire...but no matter what I do I can't pop wheelies...what's a good gear ratio for popping wheelies and cruising? I was thinking of getting a 17t rear cog what do u guys think would that be good? Can I get a lil help frm u guys thanks

  • Answer:

At 90 rpms at the crank, you are cruising along at 20.6 mph. There is the reason you can't do wheelies. Gearing too tall. Suggest changing to a 46/23. Top speed only 14 mph, but much easier to do wheelies. You bought a single speed. You have to choose, wheelies or cruising. Can't have both. Would not be a problem if you had a proper multi speed bike.

A low one. But, any gear that's good for wheelies won't be good for actual riding, unless all you have is hills to climb and coast down.

The ratio you have to be concerned with is the power/body weight. The more lard you loose the easier to pop wheelies.
