What kind of bicycle is fastest?

What kind of bicycle is this?

  • I was given this brilliant bicycle recently. It is an eighteen-speed, manufactured by Dawes. I was curious to know how old it is (perhaps someone could hazard a guess based on its design) and also - what kind of bicycle is it? Would it be a touring bicycle? Here are the pictures: http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd33/Murderdogs/DSCF0255.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd33/Murderdogs/DSCF0260-1.jpg Thank you very much.

  • Answer:

It is an early Dawes hybrid of about 1991/2 vintage. The budget rat-trap pedals give away its age. Gearing is upper budget Shimano or Suntour; 28/38/48 front ring with 13-28 rear sprocket set, matched to 26x1.5 road rims and narrow tyres. The brooks saddle will outlast the bike if looked after properly. What model it is, I cannot rightly remember. There was an upsurge in interest in all purpose bikes in the early 90's and people paid far more for them than they will now. Then, the Dawes hybrids were starting at around £250. I have a Ridgeback 501NX from 1994 and it is as good today as it was all those years ago, due in part to the internal hub gearing. I sincerely hope you will keep and care for this fine example of cycling history as there are not many of them left in that condition. Happy cycling.

Touring/commuter bike of course. Hard to date, if those are thumb shifters I see and quill stem indicates possibly 10 years old. Is that a Brooks or other full leather saddle???? Commuters don't often use newest designs either... could be much newer with low end speced parts too.

Sorry can't tell, the pictures are not good enough. Sorry never thought about zoom, by the look of the crank it is fairly modern as it appears to be alloy. That is all I can really tell you , I apologise again.

Well the pics are pretty fuzzy even if you zoom in, it looks like an old-ish Dawes Hybrid/tourer with a pannier rack fitted. Maybe a Galaxy or Super-Galaxy Normally Dawes have the model name on the top-tube. Is there any sign of a removed sticker/decal or paint fading where it would be? Perhaps you could take the frame number, usually stamped in to the bottom bracket shell under the frame, & email Dawes at, they should have a record based on the number.

Dawes hybrid early 1990s I would say. If if it was a tourer it would have had dropped handlebars and slightly thinner tyres and different gear changers (these things could have all been changed of course but most people would just buy another bike rather than changing all those features)
