What is a good bike light for riding at night?

Is it crazy for me to go bike riding late in the night?

  • Been wanting to go bike riding late at night but fearing that i might appear a bit crazy doing so. Weirdly shy to go bike riding in the day and when i go to pump my bike my freaking neighbour is alway outside (its weird he just stays out there and our places are close in an in-private way). Any way the the time range is a bout 8pm-12am

  • Answer:

Late night rides are the perfect way to relieve stress. Psychologically speaking, excersise is one of the best stress reducers. Just be careful and I would recommend a reflector on the bike that lights up!

I quite often cycle in the dark, and it's perfectly safe as long as you have good lights, and I find it very relaxing. I always have two lights at each end, and carry spare batteries. If the roads that you are riding are lit well, then you still need bright lights so that other road users can see you, but if the roads aren't lit, then your lights need to be bright enough for you to see where you are going. Make sure you wear light coloured clothing, and if possible something reflective. While most of my dark riding has been late at night, I've also ridden early in the morning. At one time I had a job where I started work at 4:45 A.M., and as it was a 13 mile ride I had to start out just before 4.00 A.M. The last 3 miles were along unlit roads, so I had to have a good front light, but obviously there is very little traffic around at that time of the day.

No, it's fine. Even if it were weird, if it's dark out, how are people going to know that it's you? However, I STRONGLY advise you to wear neon and flashing lights/blinkers so cars and other people can see you.

Yes man! Do it! I've been out at 3 am and late like that. It's a whole different experience. Where I live there isn't many lights so it's sort of limited. Find somewhere well light and go shred man, it's fun. No need to be shy then! Good luck riding!

From the safety point of view, you need reflective clothing, good strong headlight and taillight. reflectors on the wheels on the bike frames are also good to have. However, these safety measures are only half of the story. Another half of the story is on the drivers' side. Do they expect someone riding on a bike in the dark in your area? The drivers could lower their alertness when there is no traffic and by the time they see your little light, it could be too late for them to react. Also, there are MORE drunk drunk drivers out there late in the night than earlier in the evening.

I always wanted to go for a ride at night when there is no traffic. You will need a good headlight and tail light. I would also get a reflective vest. It's also a lot cooler at night.
