What type of lube to buy for road bike (Trek 1500 Road) chain and speedplay pedal (X -5)?

  • I have Trek 1500 Road bike with SpeedPlay X-5 pedal on it. Please suggest me some lube for bike chain and the speedplay cleats and pedal's O-ring. I have 'Silicon' spray lube and a 'multipurpose grease' at home. Can I use that? http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=2395&subcategory_ID=4213 My bike dealer showed me this above (White Lightning WAX type lube) is this any good for chain as well as for Pedal?

    Hi -- I'm a big fan of White Lightning for road chains. It's dry and does a great job of shedding water and dirt. Most wet lubes seem to attract dirt, which you just end up dealing with later. One caveat for White Lightning is that you have to clean and de-grease your chain before using it for the first time. I use Clean Streak, also from White Lightning, for that, with a stiff plastic brush. Once you start using White Lightning, it kinda runs on autopilot. When you reapply it in the future, it seems to displace the older lube and keeps your chain cleaner. Great stuff. For the X-5 pedals, Speedplay's tech manual just says to use "a high-quality, waterproof grease." I love Phil Wood grease or any of the good lightweight bike-specific white lithium greases available at any bike shop. Download the PDF manual at speedplay.com. Good luck and happy spinning!

do not use what you have at home! the white lightning wax is good for your chain should work for your speedplays too Also you can use GT85 I use GT85 as a cleaner/lube for my whole bike (frame too) just clean your whole bike, then spray it down with the gt85 and wipe it off, then use the WL wax on your chain

you got good advice to go with white lighting... self cleaning, thin, waxed based lube... good stuff! We use it in our shop. Also, if not, get something with teflon.
