Folding or normal bike?

Is it feasible to pull a bike trailer with a 20" folding bike?

  • Is it feasible to pull a bike trailer with a 20" folding bike, or should I stick with a 26" bike?

  • Answer:

You can pull a trailer with any bike as long as it has the proper gearing. A single speed folding bike would not be a good choice, you need one with a range of gearing to compensate for the extra effort needed to pull a trailer

I pull my kids in a 20" folding bike (Bike Friday). Works fine. It has the axle hitch. The angle of the trailer is just a bit off because the wheel is lower but it works fine. My foldable has 21 gears, so I do use the low gears. (Mine I think is the World Tourist, so with straight bar, so it is geared close to a MTB). I don't think it is any better with a MTB. If you don't have a MTB, I'd get the bike that you'd like to ride more often. Kids get older, they don't want to be in a trailer for long, you get a 3 years at most, then a copilot bike for a year or two, then they have their own bike.

Feasible maybe, desirable no way. I wouldn't do it unless it is the only choice available.

well wheel size doesn;t have a lot to do with it if you have low gears, it should be fine though the handling may be twitchy with the small wheel folder wle

I would think that a 26" wheel bike would be better.
