What to look for in a road bike?

  • I'm purchasing a road bike for an Ironman I'll be competing in in 2 months. I've never had a road bike before and I'm not sure what to look for. I plan to spend 1,000 to 1,500 and don't mind getting a used bike. Any thoughts on what I should look for/avoid for that price range?

    You definitely want to make sure you get fit properly, that's rule number one. For a TT you want aerobars and a more aggressive frame geometry. You won't find an aero road bike at that price but there are many good road bikes at that price from different companies. Test ride them and see which you like best. As far as components go, they all work well when tuned up, just weight, shifting style, and in some cases aerodynamics are the only differences. Be sure to save about 150 bucks for aerobars, and you probably want clipless pedals so that's another 150 at least. I'd recommend the caad10 5 (I have a caad10 4), It's very comfortable, stiff frame, light, and fast. Again, there are MANY other brands to choose from, you may not like the caad10 and you may end up with a trek 2.1 which is also good, try out as many bikes as you can.

Go to the local bike shop and get a bike there, fit is very important on a road bike. That is why they come in 2 cm increments instead of 2 inch increments. Try several and get the one that feels the best. There can be a big difference between one manufacturers 54 cm frame and the others. Any of the top manufacturers will be fine stay away from department store bikes. You want a road bike and add clip on aerobars for competitions.
