What kind of bicycle and brand should I buy? Also what tires/wheels?
-
I weigh 350 and am 6 foot 2 with very broad shoulders (not really fat because I have been lifting some weights and trimmed 2 inches of fat so far and put on some muscle but I am definitely overweight.) I want to lose more weight and faster so I thought riding a bike would be good daily exercise. So what kind of bike should I purchase and the brand for my size and weight? Also what kind/brand of wheels/tires should I buy? (I have read that for someone my size a specific type of wheel/tire is recommend so I do not have to keep buying new ones but not sure of which ones to buy.)

Answer:
wheels get a cassette/freehub style back wheel these are more $ than walmart specials go to a bike shop then have then adjust the spoke tension [overall and trueness] for max weight this will be the highest tension you can put then make sure the wheels are double walled all this adds up to - go to a bike shop they can see what you weigh as far as type of bike, you can;t ride a featherweight race bike get a hybrid, touring bike, or mt bike with street tires just get something you will enjoy riding tires, the bike shop can advise wider the better and the higher the max pressure the better wle

If you buy the right bicycle from the start - you won't need to purchase additional tires and/or wheels. Considering the fact I weigh in at about 250 & load up my 2011 Raleigh Sojourn "touring road bike" at least once a week with two full sacks of groceries - I'd say that's the kind of bike you should be looking at & for. Be forewarned - these bikes do not come cheap - either in price or quality. Touring road bikes are designed & built to withstand grueling cross-country trips loaded down with all the gear a cyclist needs. Links below on how I haul groceries & several top brands.

I would suggest a MTB, you will have no issues with the frame for road riding and light offroad while you lose weight. You can run high pressure 1.5" tires for better rolling resistance, but stay on paved surfaces if you do. Most bikes come with 1.8mm spokes, you will need to have the rear wheel relaced with 2.0mm if you want to trail ride, or if your streets are rough.
Cant tell much about brands but you definetely need MTB type with wide tires.

The type of cycle you need will depend on where you are going to ride it more than anything else. If you intend to ride off road, then you need an MTB. If you are only going to ride on paved surfaces, then you need a road cycle of some sort (road, touring or hybrid). If you intend to ride mainly on the roads, with occasional trail use, then a hybrid will probably be best. Any suitable cycle that you buy will have the right wheels and tyres, so you shouldn't need to change them. The only thing I will say is that with your weight you'll need to keep the pressure close to the maximum for the tyre, which will be printed on the sidewall. If the pressure drops too low you'll risk pinch flats when you ride over pot holes or uneven surfaces. The best thing that you can do is get along to your local cycle store and talk with the sales staff. They will be able to recommend a cycle for your needs, and they'll also be able to advise you on items such as helmets, gloves, cycling shorts and other accessories that you'll need such as spare tubes, pump and tool kit.
