    See your local bicycle shop. Not a discount or big box store. Every single brand they carry will suffice. Test ride several. Which ever one you like the best...buy that one. Too many good brands out there to recommend just one. A good mountain bike will have 24 speeds and double wall rims. Moving on up a notch, you can also look for disc brakes and the lock-out feature on the front fork.

I would stick to a hard tail. Look at the 29ers, if you are over 5'8" they have a nicer fit, but are a different riding style. You didn't put in your budget so I would suggest looking at something used to start with and then if you get into racing or riding more you will decide that there is always something better...
