Which is the better bike?

Which bike company is better in your opinion? Cannondale or Trek?

  • So today I bought a, I guess, "beginner", Trek road bike for $800. However, I also had the option of getting an Cannondale road bike for $950. The main reason I got the Trek bike was because it was more comfortable ride...however the dealer there said the Cannondale had more components and was one step up. I guess I can use this Trek bike for several years to come and then upgrade to a more expensive Cannondale bike. But I was just wondering what you all think of them. In general, I am glad I got a road bike so I can get in better shape, become healthier, and get back into biking like I was several years ago.

  • Answer:

A Trek for $800, the frame is made in China. Nothing wrong about that, it's just Trek feels like it isn't worth making it in the US. Most Cannondales are made in the US. Compared to Trek, Cannondale have more US made bikes than China. Because of the tough economy, Cannondale is slowly getting their frames made in China. I don't blame them. For a Cannondale that sells for $950, is likely to be made in the US. If you provide the specific bike model, I could tell you which is REALLY better.

Most of the major manufacturers are pretty comparable when it comes to quality. They all have entry level, mid-level and high-end bikes. It comes down to personal preference. If the Trek is a better ride for you, go with the Trek. Personally, I'm a Trek fan, but I know people who swear by Cannondale and some who like Giant. Everyone has their own personal preference.

The business is so competitive at the mid and entry levels that any two bikes are very likely to be equivalent values. With very few exceptions, bikes at this level are all made in one of just a few very large factories in Asia. The name on the tube doesn't mean much. The difference is the way the bike fits you and the way it rides. Look at your situation -- $150 got you better components. Were the bikes significantly different in any other aspect other than name or the paint job? HTH

oh definitly c-dale, i had a trek and it onlt lasted like 3 years i have a c-dale and its already going strong at 7 years. the are so innovative, lefty fork, system integration, and everything. and almost all c-dales over say $700 are HANDMADE in the usa while all treks are made in asia. i prefer c-dale they look nicer and i think the r higher quality.

The bikes are effectively the same. Cannondale has some interesting ideas such as the Lefty fork. But, the quality should be nearly the same. What may be different from bike to bike are the components. There won't be more components, but the components that are on bikes with comparable frames might be better. Components are easy to replace. What you should be most concerned with is is the frame.

Your Best Fiend

In my opinion, Trek has been more consistent as a company. I don't think that for the same price (unless you find a good sale price for a bike) you will find a lot of difference. I think that how you feel on a bike is more important than if the bike has a "better" groupset, which more probably is that there are just some components that are higher. Ride your bike as it is (maybe change saddle if your current one is unconfortable after a few rides), and only upgrade if something breaks, or upgraditis hits too hard. Good luck.

If the Trek felt better and fit better, you made the right choice. The only Cannondales I can think of that would run near $950 would be the Synapse7 and the CAAD9-7. Both are good bikes for very different riders. Both are worth of component upgrading. But I doubt either bike has components that would be appreciably better than the $800 Trek. If you're doubting your purchase, it shouldn't be too late to reconsider the Cannondale. If you're just wondering which make is better, that's always a point of argument.

i like trek better. They also make Gary Fisher. I have a cannondale that i paid $800.00 and now i have a specialized. I'll never go back to cannondale at least for a mountain bike.
