Which is the better bike?

Which bike is better to buy. A BMX bike or a mountain bike?

  • I am getting a new bike and my dad wants to get me a mountain bike, while i want a BMX bike. He insists the BMX will be hard to ride, but ive had one before and i love them. I just need someone to explain to me some pros and cons to the bikes. Or a comparison. all help is very much appreciated

    A BMX bike is typically fixed gear ratio so you must pedal at different cadences depending upon if you are up a hill or down to maintain the same speed. Now a mountain bike has usually 18 to 21 different gear ratios (that is three on the front and seven on the rear) which you can vary your gear ratio so that you can pedal at the same cadence but vary the amount of mechanical force you are receiving with your effort. So a BMX might be able to provide for a fun ride since you don't have to think or learn about how to maximize your effort, a mountain bike would be able to provide more return for your effort and therefore you won't have to work as hard to go longer distances or cover those distances in less time. So if you wish to use the bike for the next x number of years to just have fun then a BMX is the way to go, but if this is the last bike your dad is buying for you, you might want to think longer term on getting to places a bit more distant than you can cover using a fixed gear system.

depends on how you like to ride. if you like the way you can ride a bmx more, get that, im sure your dad is thinking of the "better traveling" bike

i'm totally with you on wanting the bmx!! i bought myself one a month ago and it is now all i can think about. they are definetly not hard to ride because within a week of having bought it i could already do a few basic tricks. and a mount. bike is also larger and heavier than a bmx so try and tell him that it will take up less space in the garage...lol let me know how it turns out cheers

well if u like just riding around and doing tricks on the bike then get a bmx bike and if u like riding the mountains then get a mountain bike. what ever suits you

Choose your own, if you make the wrong choice, you only have yourself to blame. Decide what you want to do with it. If you enjoy doing tricks and stunts, the better choice is a BMX but if you are like me and like to go on journeys in nature, get a mountain bike... simple. When I was in high school, I asked dad for a bike for a grading present. I meant a ten speed bike (1971) and what I got was a Schwinn "Balloon Tire" "No Speed" Old timer's Cadillac. Don't get me wrong, Schwinn bikes are wonderful but not the recreation tool I wanted. As a result, I used it only twice. Dad had good intentions but my dreams were shattered. I could now enter no races. I bought my own choice of bikes... thirty years later and I am thoroughly enjoying my excursions. M

You might look for a mountain bike with 24 inch wheels. the closest to both !!!!!!!

you could get a street mountain bike you would have a few gears to climb hills as well as suspension but you could also do a lot of BMX tricks on it. I think that street and dirt jump mountain bikes are much cooler than BMX bikes. one good thing about BMX bikes is they are pretty tough and dont require a lot of maintenance. here are some comapanies that make good street bikes. If you go for hammering rugged terrains, want to have a dual-suspended rig with high-end gears, know the words 'freeride' and 'downhill' or have heard of 'single-speed' ( plus getting a scab or two)---dude, grab the mountain bike. Now if you want to kick your pedals with NO SUSPENSION, do a 'superman' or a no-foot CAN-CAN, pretend to be Dave Mirra or that really rad Hoffman chap---the BMX is your weapon of choice! They are wonderful to own kid----
